Sylvan Lake,
My SSQV seems to be wide open so even if I push about 2 psi its a long semi-quiet whistle but if I throw down all 18 pounds it churps up and blows your damn ear drums. If I tighten that little set screw at the back will that give me the cool "raceish" flutter sound at higher psi?

Oh, and I don't know if i should set up the stutterbox...seems pretty tough on the ol' girl.

That "cool" flutter you hear is otherwise known as compressor surge, And is not good for your turbo. The reason it's so loud at 2psi vs 18psi is because the volume of air moving out of the blow off valve is drastically different which creates a different sound when its forced out the same amount of area.

It only happens a little bit @ 2psi because that's not a lot of boost. If anything you should LOOSEN your SSQV so that it won't surge under any conditions, especially since that thing is supposed to close tighter under boost conditions.

Stutterboxes are good for racing. If you're not racing, don't worry about it. If you are, do it.

ACTUALLY, the cool flutter of the HKS (what it is known for) comes from the dual chamber design, causing you to hear both valves shutting, and then finally a whoosh of air...

sh-sh- wooshh...

And no.

Sorry, maybe I didn't explain myself well enough. I know what compressor surge is. This is more along the lines of what I ment. Just fast forward to 2:30: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP7G2Jo5D94

That video just sounds like a regular HKS SSQV with higher boost. If you don't like the way it sounds you can run a different kind of insert, if it's not recirculated. Mine is recirculated and it flutters at full boost like that, and I'm only running stock 12psi. Truely though, you don't really want a "cool long flutter." The faster you can get all that air out of your IC pipes the better. When it's fluttering its taking a long time to let all the air out. Just be happy that it's working right and nothing's broken!
