OK, i have a 93 laser n/t that has 165k and threw a rod on the original engine because of a rod bolt that backed off, so i pulled that engine and bought an engine off of an importer and i do beleive it was a 2g engine because it had a completely different engine mount setup that i had to swap over from my engine, but i get the engine in and bolted up and i go to start it and it makes a terrible grinding sound but still turns the engine over slowly, so i take the starter back out and it doesnt engage the gears on the starter, so i take it back to the parts store and have it tested and it fails, so i traded it for another remanned one, and i bolted it up and this one does the same exact thing but does not even turn the engine over anymore so as of right now if i want to start the car i have to bump start it, so if anybody might know if i need a different type of starter for this year of 4g63 or if i need a certain starter off of a different model of car all help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the starter gear is not engaging on the fly wheel, make sure you are putting the starter in the right side up. Also make sure the starter is for that model of motor.

yeah it is rightside up it will only go in one way, but that is what i am trying to find out right now if i need a different model starter for this year of engine or not.

I know some of the backing plates are different. Like from turbo to non turbo. The turbo plate holds the starter about 1/2 inch farther away from the flywheel.

yeah that is what my problem was because i found out the engine was originally in an automatic car, so that is what i found out my problem was, thanks everyone for your help, hope to get some pics posted up of the ride soon.
