90 gsx won't go into 1st or 2nd gear

new to a dsm looking to find out if this is a common problem.....
I have a 90 gsx with a 5sp trans... if you pull the shifter towards you and up or towards you and down ( to put in 1st or 2nd gear ) the trans will only go into 3rd and 4th... just bought the car. I knew of the problem when I bought it. I replaced the shifter bushings same problem. I have to pull motor b/c of a major oil leak behind crank pulley. if parts in trans are shot who do recommend to get new ones from. I have friend who is a jdm importer... he can get me any trans out of a lancer evo I want, which model years are compatible with my car. shift cables seem to be ok. I got the car with a 91 gst auto trans parts car with it. For $800 minus the transmission and turbo.
I'm big into hondas and always wanted a dsm just never found a 1g awd in this good of condition. ( I know flame me for being a honda guy )car has 180k on it and leather seats don't have a single blemish, paint is rough though I live in new orleans so the sun beat it up. Any and all help is appreciated... thanks

adjust the shifter cables. These cars have cable linkages that get out of spec in time. Pull off the center colum and youll see the cables and ajusting nuts. Search the forums for Shifter ajustment.
