Okay, so, my 14b just gave up today. It had shaft play. Well, I just fixed my throttle body boost leak and now, today, when I was playing with it I noticed that when I'm boosting (which is still late and a little low) instead of rich, black smoke coming out I'm getting a very consistent WHITE smoke. At first, I almost shat myself thinking I had blown my head or something, but the smoke doesn't come out at idle or even when I'm on the throttle just cruising. It's only when I'm boosting, and then it pours.

So, my real question is, if I don't want another 14b turbo but instead wanted to get a 16g... Could it bolt up to my stock manifold and O2? It's got a full Megan Racing exhaust (downpipe back). I just want to get this out of the way now, since I need the new turbo as it is. If I keep boost at stock levels, should I need to upgrade any fuel mods just yet? I still have a few other kinks to work out before I start pumping up the boost, so stock levels is all I want off the 16g for now.

And, 3rdly... :) I noticed that I'm hearing a slight 'whine' from my car in the rear when I was boosting (before and after the turbo started spitting oil). I'm thinking it's the fuel pump? Is it supposed to whine under boosting? It sounds like a small buzzer that's turned down low. I'm thinking the only reason I'm hearing it is because the car is stripped to the bare metal frame from the driver seat back. Any know if it's supposed to make that noise when boosting or if something else is wrong?

This is a handful of problems, but I appreciate ANY info and ALL help. Thanks.:barf:

Okay, so, did some reading on here and found out the 16g is a great, stock replacement, blah blah. bolts right up. Cleared that up for myself. ^ ^

Now, let's talk e-Bay kits? I'm on a tight budget right now, and I was wanting to know if anyone had experience with the e-Bay 16g kits and whether or not it's worth it spending only 270 + shipping for one where as ExtremePSI charges more around 600 dollar range? Is there a reason for this other than the EXTREMEPSI is an authentic mitsu turbo? I'm not really worried about knock-off as long as it works right.

Also, the whining I'm hearing from my rear-end/fuel-pump area? Any idea as to why it's making a noise under boost?

As for the 16g, I dont know much about all the 16g's but the evo III big 16g will bolt right up to your stock exhuast manifold and 02 housing. Im not sure if you will need to add fuel, I would think so. The 14b flows 450cfms and the 16g flows 540 cfms (prett sure those are the correct numbers, correct me if im wrong), so at the same boost level you will be flowing more air with the 16g. So I would think you need to add some fuel to compensate for the extra air. Someone else is going to have to chime in on that one, I dont know much about tuning...

Like you stated yourself, research will answer your own questions. I believe there is a thread somewhere on here about a guy with a ebay 16g who had really good results. I for one, would go with a proven pruduct, the authentic 16g.

Yea. But I got 600 dollars to get my car running again and make it back 990 miles across country in about 5 days, LOL. I appreciate the info. I think I'm gonna go ahead and try my luck with the e-Bay turbo kit for th 1g. I don't really plan on beating the hell out of it right now and I don't want to go back to the 14b.

Any idea as to why my fuel pump would be screaming/whinning under boost?:thumb:

I would go with a rebuilt 14b over a ebay turbo any day of the week, the 14b has more than proven itself to make good power.

No idea about the fuel pump.

Hahah, yea! 14b not spitting oil.... 135 - 130 - 128ish - 34 cylinder compression.

I'm working from the driveway of a friend's house on roadshop. They're not exactly tool loving people.:barf: Any advice for a novice?

just because your car doesnt smoke at idle doesnt mean its the turbo. How much shaft play, in and out or side to side? in and out is really bad, side to side is not to bad as long as its minimal and the walls where the fins spin arent scratched. Could be a headgasket problem too. If you have a 600 budget you shouldnt even be buying an evo3 16g. I wouldnt buy an ebay turbo if it was 100 dollars.by the way, WHITE smoke = coolant... so if your smoke is white check places coolant is able to enter the exhaust path... turbo and headgasket are places of interest, maybe someone else can let you know other places to check out

Well, after playing around I realized it isn't just the turbo. It's definitly the head. The compression test proved that, and the turbo is good. My buddy was wrong and I didn't have any shaft play. (Newbies shouldn't take even bigger noob advice, hahah). I am going to change the head gasket and see if that does anything. The 4th spark plug was broke and the tip was wet... couldn't really tell if it was oil, it's dark, but it was definitely wet, as the others were dry. :) Appreciate the info. Wish me luck.

 So, I have a little bit of oil and coolant in my cylinders. I would say maybe 2 oz or so between all 4 pistons. The piston surfaces look good, as do the valves. How do I tell if the piston rings are good without actually taking out the piston?

check the cylinder walls for marks or scratches. Was there oil on the headgasket itself when you removed the head or was it only in the cylinders??. If theres oil and coolant in the cylinders most likely its a head gasket, but it could be something more major like a cracked head or block. But a leakdown test wouldve helped alot.

No, it all seems good so far. I think it was just the gasket as it was ripped around the side on piston 4.

I'm thinking my cylinder detonated? I was running rich in the top-end because what I believe was boost leak from my TB (BISS idle screw was no good). Then when it got bad is when I did the compression check and found the 33-psi 4th cylinder and the plug I pulled from that piston also no longer had a tip on it.

When I was running rich I would get black smoke, and that was obvious to me. Right when it seemed like the 4th cylinder was no longer firing and I THOUGHT the turbo was bad it was shooting white smoke under boost-- and only under boost. That's when I found the jacked-up compression test and realized I had blown the head.

To try and understand what happened... did it run rich and with the really high-heat from the last few days and lotsa fuel 'cause my cylinder to go boom and pop the gasket and break the plug? Tryin' to figure this all out so I can prevent it in the future. As always, any and all info is appreciated. :dsm:
