I had a car with a Apex'i Gt Fmic that while being unloaded from a flat bed was damaged ( piched it right in the middle) Now it leaks, Said company knows they messed up and are willing to pay for it. I was told by my mechanic that the core is no longer made ( so says apex'i) So he told me i need to pick out a new kit. Since i guess money is not the issue ( because tow company is paying for it)which kit would you go for? I would think i could pick it up from another retailer but i guess i cant ( insurence maybe>? ) all i know is i have to pick out something new. So i would assume it would have to be around the same price. Any suggestions

Nick

There are a number of different kits and cores out there. Go to www.extremepsi.com and check out their vast selection. Whichever one that you get should depend on what your specific HP goals are.

Take a look at ETS. Theres usually a banner for them on the top of the page. I just ordered my FMIC from them recently and its on its way! I've ready lots of good reviews on it, take a look.

sorry, The Gt apexi core is about 800 to 1000 bucks. Oh i guess i should add im running a 14b with the intention of upgrading the turbo later on......

what about the SSAC FMIC kit and some extra cash? ( i dunno, i just thought i'd through it out there) i mean, from what i hear its just as good as the other name brand FMIC AND you would get some extra cash out of the company...

My vote would be for the Victory Performance Super Street kit, but I don't think their still operating, so I guess thats out :p

If money isn't an option, I too would say DVDT Fab but I believe he's only doing "one offs" & you pay an hourly rate to get the pipes done (according to his site, last time I checked). If you need to spend around the price you listed, this kit is probably out.

For the range you have listed, if I was buying a new kit with all the current models out their, I too would probably go with an ETS system, as some have mentioned as well :thumb: .

And it all depends on what kind of FM you go with? What are you trying to do with your car? Top to Bottom, top side to bottom side, side to side? What are you trying to do? Be reasonable, I mean, all of us wish we could be Shep or Rau, but honestly, think of what you are doing. DV/DT Fab is one of the only Fabricators that actually shows how he did it, what his true test results were, so I would go with him if you don't know any better. But, unless you can do the testing on your own with your specific FM, then you kinda have no choice but to take someone else's word for it. There is a lot that does go into R&D for a specific part...

If I were to get any IC of my choice, I would get one that had same side inlets and outlets with a fairly thick core. Better flow for a given area/volume, less piping to screw with, etc.

Size issues. A lot of people will say not to go too big. In my humble opinion I don't think you can fit an intercooler into the front of a DSM big enough to cause problems. My own personal experience is on a 2.5 dodge turbo. It had a garret turbo comperable to a 14b. So with an extra .5l and a turbo that's slightly different, it's kind of green apples vs. red apples, but here goes anyways. I went from no IC, to a restrictive volvo IC, to one of the ebay EVO upgrade intercoolers. Obviously from no IC to an IC there was a big difference, and I did not notice a decrease in spool up time.

Going from the volvo IC to the EVO upgrade unit with 4x's the volume and larger IC pipes (I measured the volume increase, it's literally 4 times as thick with the same frontal area, and the flow tubes are huge in comparison) I noticed a DECREASE in spool up time. Yup, it spooled up more quickly. I think it was just that much easier for the turbo to flow. It looks bad as hell in my minivan too

This is just my personal experience. I'm not sure why some people get decreased spool up with their intercoolers, however once it's spooled up there is always a gain. Furthermore, it's only on the initial spool up, it's not every time you shift or every time you go to hit boost.

These guys have lots of good info http://www.extremeintercoolers.com/tech.html and have been recommended before. You can also go down to your local library and pick up "Maximum Boost" and have a good idea of what you're going to want and compare it to what is available to you.

That being said, I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of the selections the vendors have to offer. Keep in mind where you'll be going in the future as well. After my experience I will always tend toward one that is too big rather than one that is too small, especially with the monster turbo waiting in my garage.
