Hey im think about buying a Eclipse 97 i heard alot people say they give alot of problems is this true i know they redesign and updated the Eclipse 97-99. so are the problems just with the 1995-1996 models? i seen a 97 Eclipse with about 120,000 i just wanna leave it stock i dont wanna soup it up its an automatic transmission so do you guys think this is a good buy i checked www.carfax.com and they reported no problems please reply with help!!!

i wont be driving over 60 MPH i seen a dealer selling a Eclipse 97 GS auto with 120,000 miles on it for $4,500 i just need the car to last me about 70,000 more miles i was planing to buy it and drive it down to VA which is 400 miles away to get insurance because in NYC insurance would cost more than the car is worth but i getting scared beacuse people tell me the Eclipse gives alot of problems i have to chose between a mazda 626 98 with 105,000 miles then the 97 Eclipse with 120,000 miles both are the same price i did a carfax report and both reports were clean so which car would u guys pick? im just scared the Eclipse wont make it 800 miles for my trip for insurance well heres the pic of it

yeah i plan to give the car a tune up before i buy it i was just worried about the high miles if it was a honda i wont care i seen people push them to 250,000 miles. i did a search on the forum about crankwalk i remember seeing somebody its very rare in a auto well i seen a talon go to 160,000 but it was a 5 speed. the only problem i have is that i wont beable to test drive the Eclipse because its from a auto auction but when i did a carfax report on the Eclipse it wasnt bought in the state i live in. well it was driven in suburb areas and highways so the car might be good wishme luck:dsm:

Ive seen a few 1g's with over 200k on them.. still running. Ive seen a couple 2g's getting well over 150k too. didnt you say it was a GS? the GS models have a chrysler engine in them, so they don't have the same crankwalk problems as the turbo models do. Do your regular stuff (keep the car looking good too) and it will treat you well.

Well If you want a honda engine you might as well get a Honda in the first place...:) Otherwise if you want power get a GS-T or GSX.

well im not looking for power im just look for a car that i can use daily with out having alot trouble im gonna drive the Eclipse like a old lady i just need it to last

A NA eclipse should last. Take care of the car and it will be fine. If you want reliability then buy a Honda.

there shouldn't be TOO many problems if you take care of it... it dosen't have the CRANKWALKING PIECE OF SHI.... I mean 7bolt 4G63... and it dosen't have the STUPID FAST WEARING SYNCHRO WHORE of a manual tranny... you should be set.. :thumb: :dsm:

damn i just called a few insurance companys they told me it would cost $17,000 a year for insurance im 17 and i live in nyc anybody know any good insurance companys that cheap for teens?

Are you sure they didn't say $1,700.

An older car with high miles should be less than 17,000. I have never heard of such a high insurance rate.

Even if you were financing the car it should never be that high. If you live at home or in a dorm just have your parents put there names on the title (2nd) and try using there help.

Just a my .02

Yeah I am a 16 year old with a 99 eclipse 5 speed and I pay under $1000 a year... you should go with safe auto or something and get minimal coverage... Then again I guess it all depends on where you live.. where you park.. how many cars are on the policy... if your parents let you list it under their name it will save you alot of cash.

i wish i could put the insurance in my parents name but dad's the only one with a license and he doesnt like me so he wont help me out and my mother doesnt want me to drive 400 miles away to VA for insurance. my sister lives in VA and she has 2 cars and she pays $800 a year for full insurance. i was shocked when i called allstate and they told me it was gonna be $17,000 a year i told the lady on the phone from allstate the only way i would beable to pay that is if i start selling drugs and the bad part it isnt even full insurance its just incase insurance. im gonna beg my mother to let me go to va to get insurance its much cheaper and alot of people in NYC travel to other states because insurance is to high here!

Smokeweed420 I wish I could have got a 1997 Eclipse GS. I have a 1992 Talon n/a automatic. I bought it from a buy here/pay here lot for $2,500. The car had 142,000 miles on it when I bought it and it drove awesome until 152,000 when the transmission finally died R.I.P. , but before that happened I put $5.00 worth of Champion spark plugs on it and a new $100 tire and it drove with no problems all the way from Cleveland, Ohio to Miami, Florida cruising a 80-92mph 1,300 miles through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia to Florida. I went up hills through rain storms and sudden wash out showers just cruising with no problems.
Not bad for a 10 year old car with no known history of repairs for $2,500. If I can do that in an old car that should be in the junkyard, you should be able to get way more than 800 miles out a 1997 GS. Your car is 5 years newer with newer technology and lower mileage.

If you can travel to get a car look at these resources for better deals.

You will be alright especially since you don't plan on driving the car hard just do routine maintenance like clockwork and the mechanicals should hold up.
I recommend that you get all the fluids flushed, get the transmission fluid flushed and replaced. Definitely get a tune up and check condition of the radiator and hoses. You should be straight. Good luck:dsm:

thats only before you mod them, ask and real racer, durability is how much you take care of your car. And another note get turboed so you dont need to get it redone and engine swap = 5000 turbo engine rebuild is 1000. So which would u rather do? and you can upgrade a turbo and do other nice stuff. My friend's civic goes through the same ish as my car :p

yeah im going to buy the Eclipse this weekend my mother is gonna gimme a loan to buy it and i will pay here back i just got 1 problem my mom wants to start to learn to drive so we might have to share the car if she doesnt like it. im gonna have to get the mazda 626 sedan. um this is a question for you guys with the 95 and up how are the back seats? would people have room back there? people that are around 5'9? when i drive i dont keep my seat all the why back i keep it up so will the folks in the back have room?:| ?
