i got a hold of a 92 elantra and it seem to have a 4g63 nt in it but from what ive been reading its a 1.8 liter so my queation is whats the make the engine size different between the 1.8 and the 2.0? and could i convert this 1.8 into a 2.0 turbo? i have plans for this engine if i can use it but i dont wana have to rip it out to find it was a waist of time. someone help me out please

Non-turbo base first gen DSM's had a 1.8L SOHC 4G37, and first gen(91-95) Elantras had either a 1.6L DOHC G4CR or 1.8L DOHC G4CN.

Looking like a lost cause so far, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct Mr Peepers. I did at one time build a motor with an elantra 1.8 block and a 2.0 N/T head from a 92 talon. Everything fit perfectly. I just built it to see if it would run....sure enough, it ran great for a long time till I used quaker state oil and the thrust bearing gave out 60 miles after the oil change. The motor pulled strong enough that I could bark the tires in third gear :)

could it be installed the other way? 2.0 NT block with the 1.8 head?? I've heard this would give it more compression. I've seen 2.0 engines with 1.6 head that run great.

I'm a little curious now, is it fairly straightforward to swap in a 4g63t in its place? I know it was a Mitsu designed engine in the Elantra, and many of the parts are interchangeable. If someone had an Elantra and 4g63 laying around they might want to know. Might make a good sleeper :sneaky:

I've seen hyundai excel's with the 4G63T engine. They're little hatchback wagons (like civics) and they hold the engine. I also seen accents that have the engine, or use tiburon 2.0 engines and run really fast.

I am not really sure about the 2.0 block with a 1.8 head. it would probably work since all the oil holes and water ports are exactly the same. Not sure about valve clearance though. Never looked into that.

as for the direct swap for the 4g63 in an elantra...I believe everything would bolt up perfect since the block size is the same as a 4g63 all except for the piston size. The engine compartment on an elantra are almost exactly the same as a 1g talon.

I have actually done the project. The motor is actually a 4g67. When I buy my parts such as pistons and rings I had to get them from the g4cn so they're basically the same motor. 1836cc and the head does create more compression than a 4g63 head. They use alot of the same parts such as bearings, gaskets, etc...Everything bolts up and the cams from the the 4g67 make for a very nice high rpm pull just not so much bottom end but I can live with it since mine is turbo. As soon as the turbo starts to spool its ridiculous but you cant just throw it together since its a 9:1 compression motor. I re-enforced just bout everything since the first time i went into boost, I melted a spark plug and a piston. I just ceramic coated the pistons, cometic head gasket, arp head studs, and arp rod bolts and its holding up pretty good right now. 3 years since I started the project.
