how to test my transistor with a 1.5v battery??

I have been reading around and have seen a few times that you can test your transistor with a regular household battery....how is this done?

My car died due to NO spark and was wondering besides my transistor and COP setup what should I check to see if it has failed? Should I check my CAS?
