Hello, I am in the process of putting together a stereo system for our 97 GSX. All the factory components will be replaced. At this point I have a custom rear box that will mount 2ea. 10" subs (rated at 400 amps ea at 4 ohms). I also have a sub amp (rated at 1000 amps at 2 ohms).
The front speakers are a component set with 5.25" midrange and 1" tweeter with a cross-over network.(rated at 200 amps at 4 ohms). I plan to mount these in the door panel speaker locations. They will be driven off another smaller 2 or 4 channel amp ( which is not yet purchased).
I am undecided on the head unit. My son wants a pop-up screen display.
Question, should I also consider replacing the factory dash mount speakers and the rear 6x9 speakers with quality replacements or is that overkill? Perhaps I should just remove them.
Thanks for any recommendations.

I would leave the dash speakers alone unless they're blown and rattling. I would, however, replace the 6x9's in the rear. (I think they're some odd size like 6x8, but you can make the 6x9 work with minimal effort.)

As far as the head unit goes, who's driving the car? If it's a 16 year old, no offense, but I don't think you'd want them distracted by a flip down. I would just get a nice CD player that recognizes Mp3s :D

Yea, leave the tweeters alone, the stock ones are good enough unless there blown.

You can get a WAY better head unit for the price youd pay for a flip.

I would replace the rears with 6x9s, but that's a personal opinion. You could not replace the rears and see how you like it, and then if you don't like the sound replace them.

A flip down can be really pricey, and for the most part it's completely unnecessary. All depends on how much you want to spend.

Also, on a side note, I don't know how much you know about speakers and amps, but be careful of the RMS rating of your subs and how much your amp is pushing. Because if you're amp is too powerful it can cause problems. If you already knew that, then my apologies. Anyway, good luck with your install.

Yea replace the stock dash speakers with the tweeters you got from your component set.

They are most likely blown, or very brittle and a touch of it will start to crumble. literally, those things are crap. Especially if you decide to amp them. The stock ones are NO WAY close to good enough based on the system you plan on building.

I'm a bit skeptical about your components though. You got 5.25" component set (obviously thats the midrange size) the stock speaker and mount is 6.5" on the doors. Looks like your going to add more work making a mount adapter if you plan to install it there.

You did say you were getting subwoofers, I would just get a 2 channel amp just to power those components. You can get a 4 channel for the rears as well, but when you go and tune it you will see that the rear will be set just for fill (the right way to tune it) and that the stock amp or deck power would've been perfect and saved you money. But it seems like you already know this since you considered eliminating the rear speakers all together ;) If you are going to get 6x9s, I wouldn't spend too much money on them. I got some cheap blaupunkt 6x9s in mine, I'm glad I didn't spend too much on them, since I ended up getting a sub. I dont understand why people spend a lot of money on 6x9s when they have a sub and if tuned for the proper soundstage they will hardly be heard. But they are important if your NOT going to have a sub.

Motorized single din 7" touchscreen dvd head units are starting to get really cheap. You can get them as low as $250 when Fry's Electronics puts them on sale, $299 regular price. Look out for them during after thanksgiving sale to dip into the $1xx
