help with camshafts!!

hello!, I recently rebuild my head, it was from a 5 speed no-turbo 1G. I instaled auto tranny camshafts, but when I torqued the bearing caps to about 10 pounds of torque, the camshafts were so tight the motor wouldn't crank. I also tried the 5 speed ones, but the same thing happened. Do I need to have the head, camshafts and bearing caps machined?? Thanks for any help!!
 
Did you make sure to put them in there proper places? What I mean by that is that the cam caps are machined for each indivitual spot and one can not go on a different spot.
 
Make sure you use engine assembly lube, or a good amount of oil, I say lube it just works better.
 
I installed them in the original locations, the E ones in the exhaust and the I ones in the intake, from number 2 to 5 with the little arrow facing outside the head, and the cam gear and last one with the arrow facing inside the head. The caps are from a different head, would this might be the problem?? I called a machine shop and they said they are all the same, and a different shop said that maybe when the timing belt broke, the camshafts bent the area on top of the head where they are placed (the head cam bearings?). Could this have happened? Thanks for all the help!!
( I also used valvoline engine oil treatment, they said it's thicker and works better).
 
Don't use caps from a different head, that's your problem. The caps are machined with the head for the cam journals. If you stick a different set of caps on, they are not machined the same since they were machined with a different head. It's just like a connecting rod, the cap must match the rod. With a different set of caps on the head, you must have it line bored so that the caps match the head and are completely round.

Yep.. can't use different caps and they need to match where they were installed and machined. Depending on the wear, you may be able to have them align-bored with the head, but not sure how it would affect the tolerances with the cam journals. Need a wiseman to jump in on that one.

More importantly... it sounds like you need to find different machine shops (at least one that says "I don't know" or "I'll find out"... instead of that ^^^
 
Thanks! your words really helped me out. I had a spare head and transfered all the internals to it. It also was the head where the cam caps had been taken off, so I cheked and they worked perfectly, the camshafts turned easily. Thanks to everyone!
