Once again, I need some of that magical DSM knowledge. I'm looking into another potential car buy. This one has a really good, and really odd price. It's a 2g AWD Talon with 190k on the car, but the guy says he has a 6-bolt swap in it with receipts etc. He says the only problem the car has is that the 2g ECU isn't set up for the 1g motor and that causes the CEL to come on. Is there more to this than he's saying? This car is actually close to my house so I plan on going to look at it in person, but I wanted to arm myself with as much knowledge prior to the actual event as possible. Is there certain things I should look for that he might have no done properly when swapping the motor that should be noted? Any additional info? The car has a really low price, so, I'm expecting there to be flaws, but I just wanna know what I might be getting myself into should I decide to buy... :thumb:

Thanks.:talon:

Pull the error code (if you can) and see exactly what's causing it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only real difference is the cam angle sensor. I think road race engineering has a good write up on the swap, you should check there to see what all goes into doing the swap and you should have a better idea of where to look for problems.

And the standard things:

1. Does the transmission shift smoothly
2. Is the compression good/even
3. Does the turbo have shaft play
4. Anything else I may have forgotten

Cool. I'll check out that write up. And yea, naturally, I was going to check for the basic stuff when I went to look at it. I'm assuming it's still driveable, just throwing the CEL light on. Isn't it better to have the 2g ECU with the 1g Motor because of the EPROM or something like that?

I would recommend taking a look at this - Magnus Motorsports 1gina2g - http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/tech/1gina2g.pdf

Also, as mentioned above, RRE's 1G in a 2G - http://www.roadraceengineering.com/2g6boltmotorinstall.htm

It will tell you what all goes into doing a 6 bolt swap.

Look at page 11 and it will give you instructions as to what to do if you get a CEL. I have a 2G with a 1G (7 bolt :notgood: ) and I had to do the potentiometer mod and now the engine runs fine. It was done by the person who installed it but they just crimped the connections so it would run funny every now and then. But after soldering them, it's fine. There are also other threads on here that talk about this mod and alternatives to doing this.

And yes, the 1995 ECU specifically is the best ECU because it has the EPROM chip in it. Almost all '95 ECU's came with the EPROM. Here is a way to tell the difference between EPROM and non-EPROM - http://www.dsmlink.com/faq-eprom.html

Hope this helps!

Bring a code reader and find out what the code is. The only code thats really 6-bolt in a 2g related is a random misfire code. Since the swap uses all 2g sensors (except for a 1g CAS) then there shouldn't be anything different to the 2g ECU.
