Calgary,
I did a search and couldn't find anything specific to my particular issue.

I am working on a 98 Talon with the 420A engine and an automatic tranny. The car has about 200,000 miles on it and spun a rod bearing. The engine is in the car and I've pulled the oil pan and all the connecting rods off. Unfortunately the spun bearing has damaged the crank so I need to remove it. Do I have to pull the engine? Can this be done with th engine in place? Does the tranny have to come out?
I've pulled all the bolts off of the deck but it seems like there is still something holding it together. Its the first time I've worked on a car with a deck holding the crankshaft in place so I'm not sure whether I'm missing something.
Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

John

If I remember correctly (it's been a while since I build mine), the oil pump on the front of the case needs to come off.

I would pull the whole engine and rebuild it right. What caused the failure? Did the oil pump go bad? With 200k, a lot of the engine components are worn and need replacement. You should at least replace the timing belt.

We took the oil pump off. I'm doing this for a neighbour's son who bought the car cheap. It had a rod knock and I was hoping to be able to pulll the bottom end off and replace the bearings. Unfortunately the spun bearing damaged the crank so it needs to be ground. The deck plate really complicates things but I was hoping it was possible to remove the crank without pulling the engine.
Not sure how much this engine (420A Neon engine) is different from the other 2.0l engine that was offered.

You will need to pull the transmission to get the rear main seal off so you can pull the crank out.

Pulling the crank out of the 420a with block in car is essentially the same as pulling the crank from any other 4 cylinder car with block in car. The 420a has a bed plate as opposed to main caps. 20 bolts. The tranny will have to be removed from any car when pulling the crank, nothing new here. The timing belt and front cover/oil pump will also have to be removed, nothing special about that either.

If you have ever pulled the crank out of any other 4 cylinder car, you can pull it from a 420a.

p.s.: The lower deck holding the crank in place is called a bed-plate. With all the bolts removed, smack it around (gently) with a mallet or dead-blow, and pull down. Be VERY careful if you have to pry, and pry evenly. There are locating pins that line the bed-plate up, and the pins are an interference fit with their holes.

When replacing the bed-plate, there should be a little o-ring at the oil port. Make sure it is there when you re-assemble, or you WILL be leaking a lot of oil.

yah that oil pickup o-ring is tiny and easily lost, but can be picked up at your local chrysler for cheap.

If you are going to pull that engine all i can suggest is drop the tranny out the bottom first, while leaving your motor mounts still on. Then the motor easily comes out the top.

If you are rebuilding at 200k i suggest checking out howell who makes a pretty sweet crank for you car, might as well get water and oil pumps while your at it. With your engine as well as mine if you have it stripped down a timing belt is also quite a good idea as well.

Before you can just drop the crank in though your best off taking it to a machine shop and getting them to properly machine and balance the crank. re-check your bearing clearances. You know all that good stuff.
