I am in the process of rebuilding my motor and trans in my 97tsi fwd. I know that I will have many questions, and am going to put all of them in this thread.

I am heart set on the stage 2 shep trans for fwd. :thumb:
This car is daily driven, along with auto cross and a little bit of drag use.

I plan on doing the sbr stage 2, 2.3L stroker kit. I am going to also put on sbr's stage 5, 2g head. I am going with hks cams, and cant decide which ones to get. I am trying to decide between a pair of 264's, 272's, or a combanation of the two? Any suggestions greatly appreaciated. I drive the car every day to school. I do not care about a lopping idle, or how loud my o2 dump is(these things dont bother me being that I am a 17year old male:rocks: ) I just dont want something that could decreas the life of my motor. Also, is anyone runing a 2.3L in their fwd, if so how is that working out for you?

I'm in the process of finishing up my stroker build. You can check it out here: Stroker link

I went with 272's because I already had them. If I was buying new cams, I'd certainly consider Forced Performance. I wouldn't go with 264's on a stroker. I previously ran the 272's on a 2.0 daily driver. The idle is not bad at all.

The main thing to remember about cams is that in a bigger engine bigger cams will act like smaller cams in a smaller engine. So basically 280's in a 2.3 will act roughly the same as 272's in a 2.0.

i would build up the engine/head yourself with the help of a local machine shop. SBR :notgood: i know people that have had big issues with there stuff including myself.

You can build up a race head and block cheaper and better then getting it from SBR.

I'm local for you, so i could help you out if needed.

Ya, I need help. I have had good experences with them so far.... You said that I could get more for less if I do it myself, but dont know where to take things to get them machined. Where are would you recomend locally?
thanks

As was mentioned, I would recommend finding a good machine shop to build both the head and the block. You don't need to spend over 5k to build that engine. I spent nearly half that and have a MUCH better build IMO (align honed, balanced, arp all around, clearances to my specifications, block squared, cylinder head CC matched, flow benched head, but most importantly I got to watch the build and communicate with the builder during the entire process). Does that head even come with cams?

My suggestion for cams is to go big. I have FP2's but wish I had FP3X's. Do a search on this forum and dsmtalk; you'll find information that compares HKS to COMP (COMP cam's seem to perform better on a stroked motor; COMP cams are the same as FP cams).

With the setup that you're building I would suggest DSMlink and a better clutch. An upgaded transmission is definately a good idea. I hear NOTHING but good about shep but I've been happy with my TRE transmission for 5 years; not a single issue and I put my car through hell.
