Regina,
Alright so not to long ago I was driving and then I noticed my temp gauge was abnormally high. I just added coolant to my car (pre-mix) a few days ago, so I thought that was the issue. I check the coolant and it wasn't that. It was night so I pulled out my trust cell phone and looked at my belts. It looked like a bunch of wires were on top of my alternator. I reach my hand in and grab it and it's rubberish material. I knew by that time I shredded my belts. I pulled them out and they were SHREDDED. I knew my alternator belt was going because it was cracked and squeeled a bit.
So anyways I get new belts put in by my mechanic (AutoHost in Regina is the best for DSMs). So I get it home and stuff, and I'm noticing theres a weird sound coming from my belts. Sounded like a threw a bearing in one of my pulleys. I wouldn't doubt it because I had just shredded my belts. So I take it back, and it turns out I'm right. I need a new alternator, pulley was shot.
While I'm there I decide to do a bunch more maintenance on my car. Along with a alternator($397) I bought and got installed a new water pump, timing belt kit, cam seals($50) and crank seals($50). Labor came to $612. In total its going to cost $1900CDN to do the maintenence. But atleast its done and out of the way.

. You could have spent $500 on some good tools and gotten all that done in a day yourself. I'm sure you could have gotten an alternator for cheaper as well.
