Evo suspension? Galant vr4s can do it so why can't 1gs?

I was recently searching galantvr4.net and found the popularity of the evo suspension install interesting. Considering that gvr4s and 1gs have very similar if not identical suspension set-ups, and the cars have similar weight's and f/r weight distributions. Can anyone tell me why this wouldn't work on a 1g?

Known weights and distributions:

1g dsm: 3145lbs 59/41
GVR4: 3250lbs 58/42

The fact that used stock evo shocks and springs can be obtained cheaply through websites such as evolutionm.net and others makes this even more appealing. If you got the blistens from an MR is would be even better.

So does anyone think it can be done or is worth a shot, because i am considering doing this.

The evo suspension is longer, it will raise your car.

It makes a Galant sit about stock height in the front and 1.5" low in the rear, pretty much the same thing Dsm suspension does to a Galant. The rears take some modification to fit, if you're not a very skilled welder don't attempt it. I have Evo 9 suspension on my car and after I fix the mismatched ride height issue, I think I'm going to like it a lot. You can get used Evo suspension for around $200 and if you don't like it you could always just resell it to a Galant owner for what you paid.

if you are after a evo set up I has a compleat aftermarket set up from my evolution III that will bolt into a dsm or galant
kyb new sr specials (struts and shocks)
rsr springs (2in drop)
cusco front camber plates

sell it all off sence I just put in a set of 3600.00 cucso zero 2r coil overs in the evo

1.5 inches low in the rear? All of the how-to's I have read say it sits at about the stock ride height front and rear. What do you mean exactly by 1.5 inches low.

So I would need to:
1. Buy stock evo suspension
2. Get dsm rear strut circles welded on to rear evo struts
3. Front spacers inbetween the knuckle and strut ears.
4. A way to attach brakelines to struts
6. Ways to adjust camber adjustment front and rear
7. Cut springs or use lowering springs to adjust ride height

Am I forgetting any thing?

The only other question I have is on the strut top mounts (Connects the spring to the shock and also tothe car).

Taken from Galantvr4.org:

"I would suggest using the EVO rubber mount on top, and the stock Galant/DSM top-mount ( Top-mount is the one that bolts to the shock tower on the body of the car ).

It fits perfect that way, and you won't need to trim the rubber mount to get the springs to sit properly. I'm doing the fronts later today."

GVR4592, did u do this?

I heard this set-up handles much much better than the agx/pro-kit set-up for the same amount of money (if you find the used suspension for cheap). :dsm:

I've read in a few places that some people's car's sit level and others sit low in the rear. I don't know why they would be different. I know the rear Evo struts are at least 2" shorter than a stock Galant strut. I see a lot of the guys cutting their front springs, but no explanation as to why they are doing this. I'm assuming it's because of the ride height issue.

1: Yes
2: Yes
3: Yes
4: I don't remember exactly what I did here, I know I used the stock brake line mounts on the front or the rear, but I can't remember which one or if it was both. I'll have to go take a look and get back to you on that one.
5: The rear is fine the front needs some adjustment
6: If you want to, I hear the Espelir springs are pretty nice with the stock Evo struts.

The only other question I have is on the strut top mounts (Connects the spring to the shock and also tothe car).

I used the Evo mounts. I guess that could be why I have uneven ride height, I haven't looked into it yet.

4. The stock brakeline mounts from the dsm? That would be cool if you could just bolt on the brakeline mounts and have them work, some people have gotten the stock dsm ones welded on real quick, and that works well too.

Did you use the evo rubber top mount and the dsm metal top mount together?

Thanks for the link by the way.

The only other thing that worries me is getting these welded. I don't own a welder or know how to weld so I would have to take them to a shop. Hopefully someone will be comfortable welding on a pressurized shock. :thumb:

What should I be shure to look for when finding someone to weld these? I'm assuming this is going to be TIG right?

I wouldn't use the EVO suspension. We have tried it on 2 GVR4s here and in the rear it works very well, but in the front the struts don't have enough dampening. The car bounces like a slammed car with OEM worn shocks. We have several customers with the EVO suspension on their GVR4s too and it feels the same. Maybe I'm just too picky, but the ride totally sucked and I couldn't stand it on my car. My brother still has his on his GVR4, but is going to try the MR struts in the front to see if that makes it any better.

That's really odd, mine doesn't bounce at all, it's the smoothest riding suspension I've had on my car to date. It's comparable to my cousin's Evo with Tein Ha's in the handling deparment and the ride is similar. Maybe you just have some worn out struts.

It looks like I used the stock brakeline mounts with some bending.

I used the Evo rubber and metal, I redrilled the holes in the strut towers.

Find somebody that's a very experienced tig welder and has good feel for heat control. I used wet rags to keep the shock body cool and a temp gun to monitor surface temps.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the lower strut mounting bolts. You need to either get some longer bolts from the hardware store, or drill the knuckle out and use the larger and longer Evo bolts. The stock bolts are just too short to safely use.

Maybe, but we have tried 3 sets now with very low miles and they all seem to be bad. Hopefully my brother will have better luck with the MR stuff... He currently has the Tein springs and EVO VIII shocks. Maybe 30k miles is about it for EVOIII shocks? Others, including myself, just swapped over the OEM strut assemblies and it feels aweful!

I am intrigued by this set-up. I am waiting to drive one of the local's GVR4 with this suspension. It does looks like the rear is a bit too low for a GVR4, so it "should" work just fine on a 1G.

However, looking at the photos, it seems to me that it should be pretty easy to remedy the low GVR4 issue, just put a 1/2" spacer before you weld in the bottom mounting point!

I really want to do this and document the whole thing for a how-to or vfaq. The GVR4s that have had success with this say the handling is 10x better than the agx/springs combo. I can't even imagine it with MR shocks and evo lowering springs!!!!

I wish I would've done that before I put it all together. I'm having a pair of 1/2" spacer's made for the upper mounts instead, since I already welded the lower mounts in.
