I was recently removing the bolts from the flywheel and I had somone hold the the otherside where the belts go with a pipe wrench. Well we got a few bolts off the flywheel and then this piece on the harmonic balancer or around that area a piece broke off. It's was a complete circle look like some sort of hard rubber with some litlle holes in it. My question is with the part that came off will it effect the way the engine runs? I dont know what the part is so I thought I would ask some ppl on here. like I said I dont know if its part of the harmonic balancer or what all I know is it is broken now and I dont want anything to mess up on the motor. thanks for the help

Pictures would be helpful.

I would always recommend replacing the harmonic balancer if it is in question. It is a general maintenance part that is often neglected.

If that part that broke off was in fact the rubber that separates the inner half from the outer half of the balancer, the replacing this part just jumped to the top of your must do list.

Thanks bro for the info, I dont know all I know is the pipe wrench was gripping the outside of the crank where the belts go and the other end of the wrench was on the inside I thought the part was metal but I quess not and that when it broke I will try to get some pics for you the engine still turns on doesnt seem to be making a big diffrence but I dont know

This part won't affect the way that the engine runs.

This part's purpose is to drive your accessory belts and dampen those accessories and the cranckshaft from harmful vibrations.

The part is metal, however it is composed of two round pieces of metal with rubber between them. This rubber rots over time and the two parts can separate. This separation will at the least cause your accessory belts to fly off. At the worst, I have heard reports of it flying around, cracking the timing belt cover, making the timing belt jump some teeth, causing valves to run into pistons. Thus having to rebuild the head and possibly the block of your engine.

This part should be replaced with an OEM (factory) part. I would not risk getting a solid pulley that is offered via the aftermarket. The process of replacement is really simple and is outlined on the site as well as the Haynes, Chilton, and factory repair manuals.

You've destroyed your harmonic balancer. It was probably dying anyway. They all do.
