I have a 1996 Eclipse GSX that is automatic. Over the past few years, this problem becomes a little worse. When coming to a stop, when the transmission downshifts, I hear a loud clunking sound. It is not a transmission problem (not gear or valve body related). I was thinking could it be my trans/motor mounts wearing down? When I shift into drive, the engine moves a few inches back and forth. Is that normal, or are the mounts worn? Also, could it be my center diff?

Definately change out the mounts. Worn mounts can cause a lot of diferent noises.
