I've done some searching on this and I can't seem to get a definite answer. I'm looking at an AWD that needs some work done to it, and since I'm pulling the head on it, I was going to do a little head work on it while its off. Now the question is can you install an aftermarket cam and still use the stock springs and retainers or will I have to get aftermarket springs and retainers? I was thinking about getting some 264's but I found some Brian Crower 272's for cheap and I might get those. Any info would be appreciated as I am still hazy on headwork. Thanks.

Well, it depends on the condition of the springs.
As long as you are careful and don't rev past redline, then you should be ok.
I'll be getting a set of cams pretty soon and I will definitive get a set of valve springs and ti retainers, so that I can rev past red line. I like to do it one time and do it safe and right.
So I would recommend getting a set of springs and retainers. The kit doesn't cost no more than 230 bucks. Thats for single springs of BC. According to some of the searching that I've done. These are some of the finest, if not the finest single springs that can let you rev all the way past 9k rpms. Amaizing for a single spring. And they are very cheap. Get them:thumb:

Here is some info that might help off the brian crower website:

Stage2
Street/Strip Specification
Plug and play application. Short duration for nice street manners, slight lope at idle. Excellent all purpose spec.
OEM spring OK.

Stage 3
Street/Strip Specification
Longer duration profile, added rpm potential. Intended for fully built engine. Tuning and ECU mods recommended. Requires kit BC0100.

You don't HAVE to have them but they are definately recommended. It keeps the valvetrain so much more stable it is just added insurance.

Stage 2 are the 272 and the Stage 3 are the 280, correct?

I wasn't really planning on running past the stock redline anyways. I just wanted to get more power in the early to mid-range before the turbo starts to spool as I am planning on upgrading the turbo at some point later in time. Ideally, I would like some 264's because they would help out in the range that I want but the ones that I have seen were either from Comp Cams or HKS and they are both $500+, that's why I was planning on BC's Stage 1 since they are cheap.

I have fp2's with stocksprings and retainers and will be revving to 8000rpm. I will let you know how it goes. I hope I can have the car running this weekend, which is going to be hard since I have nobody to help me.

That would be nice and give me a good idea as to how they will perform. Morpherex: I realize that with a different cam lobe the powerband will move up that's why I wanted a 264 combo but BC doesn't offer a cam with a .264 duration and I don't want to have to spend $500 plus on a mild cam.

Well this is for a 3/S Twin Tubo. But I assume they are going to be the same. The stock valves are good for about 8100-8200rpm then they start to float pretty bad.

You can't accurately say that. Because it will be different for different cams. Valve springs are not just good for a set rpm. Because when you increase lift and ramp rate they will start to float sooner.

Though I do not run BC cams I run Comp Cams 101200 272 equivalient...

Cars nice and rev happy power band isn't bad at all...Watch when your turbo starts spooling your rev's will fly, I hit rev limiter quite a few times already on mistake, Stock springs and retainers. Runs like a champ youll be fine, just don't go too high on the rpm band too often ...

I am also interested in the question myself.

So far you can run:

Brain Crower 272
Comp Cams 101200

any others? WHich would you suggest out of these? Also, I found a set of Comp Cams FS cheap in which seller says there are roughly 9k on them. The cams did have rust on them but was removed with WD-40 (which kind of scares me) Stay away or they should be fine?

I run web 546/547 cams on a stock VT. I have had no problems with the cams other that tunning the idle. I pull 10 hg's at idle and boost is instant on the stock 14b. On my 50 trim I noticed full boost about 800 rpms eairler than stock cams. I was told that the web cams are about 272's.

I personally don't re-use cams. Others swear you can and they just haven't worked well for me. I also just bought comp 101200's and I love them! I have a big 16g and it spools very fast! I have the manley springs and retainer kit that I got from Slowboyracing.com. They hooked it up for around $220. Upgrade while your there!!

I might just go ahead and get the springs and retainers for the insurance, but do I have to get adjustable cam gears as well or will the stock gears allow me to dial them in? I imagine that you would have to in order to be able to dial them in, but I don't want to have to spend another $300 just for those.

I don't know about brian crower cams but comp, hks, and fp say you don't need to degree them. I am just going to bolt in my fp2's. I have two friends who just bolted in comp 101200's also.

I personally wouldn't take the chance of messing with that type of internals from ebay....Not only that but look at the guys feedback....Even if he is legit, don't be the guinea pig....Unless you don't really care to give it a shot......Just my $0.02

What about these WEB CAMS

Valve lift: .400/.385
Duration in degrees: 272
Duration @.050 in degrees: 206
Grind Number: 546/547

I am looking for the best "bang for ya buck" cams on stock head.

I have used the DKS 264 cams before and they worked awesome I would recommend them for a decently modded car.
