I was working on my car...and after a lot of looking at a fews leaks....I noticed that..well...i need a new turbo on my car. Well i have been readlly digging the Evo 3 16G ported tuirbo....my only question is i need the TD0H5 and i have been looking and on Ebay I have seen them for like lerss than 400 dollars new and the the people have like a 100% reputation. why is it so much cheaper? for example this isn't an ebay turbo but its still like half the price. can anyone tell me why?? also i need one for and AWD manual...and i have heard that the autos and manuals have different turbos??? i don't know about that one so...any info i can get would be greatly appreciated!

To put it simply: SSAutoChrome is eBay turbos... They are usually the producers and suppliers of the eBay turbos that you hear about here in the forums. The reason why it is so much cheaper is because they usually use lower quality parts from China to cut down on cost. That usually meant a marginally competent product as well A.K.A. "You get what you pay for...". From what I've read, they have been getting better in the quality of their products. However, if you search "SSAutoChrome" a little bit on here, you will find horror story after horror story regarding SSAC's products, especially the turbos. But, again, on the flip-side, some have had great success with SSAC's products as well... Normally the praise goes to the non-mechanical products like downpipes and exhausts. The mechanical products like turbos, wastegates, and blow-off valves are usually the ones that are problematic and are complained about. So if you want to take that chance, go for it. Personally, that chance is too much for me, but it's all up to you. Do some searching and make up your own mind based on what you read. :thumb:

Just because you're leaking oil you think you need a new turbo? Where's it leaking from? Is there oil in the lower intercooler pipe? Not boosting?

I really doubt your turbo is blown. Take your intake pipe off, and check your turbo for shaftplay.
How you do that is, you put your fingers inside the turbo inlet (when the cars not running) and try to move the wheel inside. If you are able to move it right/left or in and out a lot then you may have a problem.
And are you blowing out any smoke from your exhaust?

Also, the STOCK turbos on 1gs were different for automatic and manual, but when you upgrade it doesn't matter.
Plus, what are your goals with the car?

Ok here is how i figured out i need a new turbo...my intercooler is full of oil, my upper IC pipe has a lot or oil in it, and the tubo also has oil in it and the little piece from the aircan to the turbo, has oil in it. This was a used turbo from when i rebuilt my car from a buddy of ours. I really don't know what else could cause that much damage oil wise. And thats the only place that oil is wet or leaking from. and also...i want to upgrade anyways...but i need one really soon if its leaking that badly. thats how that car needed to be rebuilt in the first place. (i bought it broken). i just want to make sure that i am getting the real deal turbo and not somethig is going to crap out on me 20,000 miles down the road. Also my goals for the car are about 300WHP so i know i need to get the fuel pump for sure and a bosst...etc. other than that i love my car!!! Oh and does anyone else have any problems with the exhaust manifold ever getting cherry red hot?? Mine did that too me...and i think its because there is oil getting in there somehow.... i dunno.

Oil will find its way into the intake tract through the breather in your valve cover over time, it's perfectly normal. You can put a filter or catch can to block the oil with something like this: http://www.tgilmore.com/talon/catchcan.html (for a 2g but still applies for 1g's). Yes it could still be your turbo, but if it doesn't smoke under boost and there aren't any weird noises or excessive shaftplay your turbo is most likely fine. I'd find any reason to upgrade though ;). By the way, the oil has nothing to do with your exhaust manifold getting red hot. It's normal after driving under boost or at highway speeds.

If you're worried about getting a real deal turbo, then I'd just pick up a used E316G off the classifieds here. They're generally going for around $400 or less, and you're getting the real deal from people who are just upgrading to something bigger, like a 50trim or what have you.

I've seen posts on these ebay turbo's and it's mainly a mixed bag. Some say they've had great success with it, while others have had very bad problems. The thing is, you take a risk with any turbo you buy, be it brand name or knock off. The knock off's just generally carry a slightly larger risk, as like someone already stated, they're generally made with lower quality parts to cut down on prices.

Just to claify...my car has been running for 5 days. so over time probably doesn't mean in that amount of time....i'm hoping, also its amazing that that thing could get so hot. And see becasue i live where i do...my car has to pass a visual inspection for the I/M. so the reason i am looking at the evo 3 is because it has the same numbers and its the same size as a stock. i can deal with other thigns being illegal but the amount of time it takes to remove the turbo doesn't make me want to get something that doesn't seem stock.

It's going to take you the same amount of time to swap a turbo regardless (roughly anyways).

I went from a T25 to a 14b, and it took me no time, even though it's routed slightly different (addition of J-pipe, new feedline, tweaking coolant lines).

Well if your going to do it once then you should go with the "real" Evo turbo. Buying the ebay version may or may not do you good and you might have to buy ANOTHER turbo. The EVOIII isn't going to take much work at all to install as Xeiros said. If you need any help with your car just let me know. It would be nice to meet another DSM person in my area who actually cares about things besides being the lowest and the who's shift nob is the brightest...
