Is this something you can do by yourself or do you have to send it somewhere ? Where's the cheapest place that they do it ?

If you're good with electronics you could do it possibly. I would take it somewhere, or better yet send it to one of the guys that do this as their specialty. Steve (that's his user name) on here is good I've heard, as well as ECMTuning (they make DSMLink and do ECU mods). I'm sure there are more, just search around for them.

You can do it yourself. I socketed my ECU but unless you already have experience replacing IC board components I definitely wouldn't recommend trying to learn how on your ECU. The traces are very delicate and easy to damage. Leave a little solder behind and you'll pull the trace off the board. Use too much heat and you risk damaging chip you're removing or components nearby. You'll need a fine tip soldering iron, a solder removal tool and some braided copper solder wick. Practice desoldering and soldering components on a junk board before you tackle your ECU. Search the web for 'how to desolder chip' and you'll find instructions and tips. If you're at all unsure about your ability to do this then it's better to pay someone.

where do most people send their ecu's to get socketed ? How much does it cost ?

Most people have it socketed by the same place they're buying their chip.

www.dsmlink.com will do it as part of the dsmlink package for $30 more.

www.dsmchips.com will do it for $50 including shipping. They also have a list of other places that will socket your ECU on their website.

I just got mine back from being socketed, cleaned, and having the caps replaced on mine. I got mine socketed by Terry Posten from the GalantVR4 board. He charged $33 to do the work and ship it back to me and I had to ship it to him in Iowa. It looks and works great. Good communication and very good work!

Here is his info:

[email protected]

$10.00 for the caps replacement and cleaning.
$10.00 for the standard socket.
$25.00 for a ZIF socket.
$2.00 for Paypal fees. Sorry, but this is just Paypal.
$11.00 for shipping ground UPS (discount for multiple shipping to same address)
