Well after i was fiddling with making a short throw shifter, i realized i have never went into fifth gear in my talon. The reason i realized this is because the car simply wont go into 5th gear. I have not drove the car much due to it being in the garage ripped apart every other day but, I do know some things from the previous owner when i bought it.

-The original tranny is sitting in the back of my garage with a supposedly blown out second.
-It was his "track" car and the only purpose of the car was to drag race.
-has an act 2600 clutch in it.

now things ive noticed is the whole driveline seems different than my 92 laser awd turbo even though they are supposed to be the same cars. The differences seem to be rooted around the laser shifts easy and the ratios seem a hair different. The talon seems to shift harder throughout all the gears. (im not sure "harder" is the right word)

my question is is it possible for the tranny currently in the car to be some sort of built up "race" tranny. is it known on some trannies to have 5th removed or not there. I know noone can say yes your car has this, I'm just wondering if its possbile since reverse works fine so im pretty sure the shifter/cables cannot be the problem. The whole tranny works flawlessly otherwise.

I know alot of dog box transmissions dont have fifth. Magnus motorsports offers it as an option but not standard. I dont think shep racing's dog box has fifth as an option.

but I would doubt you have a dog box unless this car is really nasty, as it would be major overkill.

Good news here is that you can access fifth gear without dropping the tranny. I just finished a tranny rebuild on a 2g, I have a 1g tranny sittin around and they seem pretty similar.

firstly, there is a "cap" on the end of the tranny, passenger side, that house 5th gear. You will be able to take this cap off and lose a very minimal amount of tranny fluid, all from the passenger side of the car. Now don't quote me on this, but I think it is 8 bolts @ 10mm.

The nice part is, you can take off your passenger wheel and plastic splash guard to do this all. It will take about 20 minutes to dissassemble. Don't worry about losing pieces, everything is locked in, you can't screw up your tranny doing this. When you have the cap off, have a friend shift the shifter to check if it is getting hung up on some destroyed syncros or what. When your in there it will be very obvious if something is wrong because you'll have a bunch of mangled teeth staring at you in the face.

If you PM me, I can get some pics of it for you tonight.

Actually Im bringing back my old thread. My throwout bearing decided to become a pancake so i ripped the tranny out. still no fifth gear. It appears to be tight but i have to go get a 36mm socket. I was trying to shift it manually into 5th and it simply does not shift. reverse goes in fine. Any ideas on what can be wrong?

Ill elaborate when it was on the car, fifth gear simply wouldnt work. Like theres no grinding or engaging. The tranny simply doesnt go in. Could it be a bent shift rod or something? it feels like when you go from fifth to fourth and you accidently go into reverse but the tranny is setup to not let this happen and its just a firm blocked type feeling. I hope im explaining this right.

Any ideas since the tranny is off, I can check it all out.
