V.cover to catch can???

On a few car with a fully built motor, I see on the left side of v.cover (in front of cam sensor) and where the pcv valve goes, some people run about 1/2 lines to a catch can.

Why is that and do they "port" the holes on v.cover to fit the huge lines from it?

Also why do people tap a hole where the ex.cam goes as well?
 
Running the breather and pcv to a catch can keeps oil out of the intake. It also eliminates a possible boost leak from the pcv valve if it ever sticks open. You have to run a line from the catch can back into the intake before the turbo though, it still has to have vaccuum.
