I searched the forums about starters problems but, I didn't find my problem. After I installed my starter, I tightened the mounting bolts to the specification that my shop maunal says to but, when I tried to to start the car all it does is whine. It never did that befofe I took it off. I appreciate if some could help me out?

Hit the starter with a hammer or a wrench. If it starts after you hit it, the starter is bad. Hitting it to make it work is only temporary.

You shouldn't need to shim unless the old one was before you took it out. If you do end up havign to yank it back out, try to take a look at the teeth on the flywheel to see if they are beat up/missing. Had that problem with one of my previous cars and was too cheap to fix it so i would only park where i could catch it in gear.

im having the same problem, but it will start if i crank it like 6-7 times and only when the car is cold, should i bother with a starter or focus more on the flywheel

A starter has an internal clutch switch. If this does not engage the gears will spin without being pushed forward to make contact with the flywheel.

If your starter was a remanufactured one it is possible that they did not replace the broken part.

You can take the starter back off and to the localparts store (Auto Zone for me) They will hook it up and test the clutch. If it doesn't engage... ta da! =)

This definetely sounds like your starter is bad. Pull it and have it tested like I described above. It shouldn't cost very much to replace it

ill have to do that, how hard is it to swap out a starter for a person moderately auto inclined

No problem at all. You'll need to jack the car up most likely.

Disconnect the battery
Remove the Starter cables
Unbolt the starter

and then reverse for install. Very easy but should take an hour of work plus the drive to AutoZone to get it tested.
