I am planning on doing a custom side-exit 2.5" exhaust. I am going to mount a universal, round, straight thru muffler behind the cat and have the pipe turn out ahead of the left rear wheel. I am looking at dynomax ultraflow race muffler, thrust glasspacks, hedman hedder glasspacks, ect.

Does anyone have expirience with using glasspacks on DSM's? Would a glasspack provide enough sound suppression if i am using a 3" DP, 2.5" cat and 2.5" piping?

I ran a glasspack on my 02 WRX. I had installed a Apexi muffler but it was still a little loud for my taste, so I used the glasspack as a resonater.
If your just running the glasspack...it's going to be totaly loud. The Subaru has a deeper off beat tone, the DSM will certainly be louder.
I was already thinking of suggesting a glasspack to you reading your title due to your space sonstraints. Just keep in mind, the kind of exhaust your doing is going to be louder, shorter, and nastier than a regular behind the axle exhaust with a DB supressing muffler. If you don't mind the noise, it should be pretty bad ass. Especially if you start to run a really hot competition set up on your engine and it blow's blue flames out of the exhaust!
ANother good alternative to the glasspack would be a low profile square flowmaster style muffler. It would be quieter if noise is a concern.

I* ran/am running a side exhaust (w/ no cat) on my 1g and these are the troubles I encountered, that you might like to consider:

btw, I'm running 3" all the way to the end.

1. I had to use a straight-thru exhaust (Straight-Thru Magnaflow Resonater), unfortunately, Magnaflow was the only one I could find that fit. Fortunately, it didn't sound half as bad as I was expecting, definitely grumbley, and when you WOT, it sounds like the entire underbelly of your car is in a wicked hellfire.

2. At first the exhaust was simply designed to do a slight down-turn and stay central underneath the car. I didn't have any serious heat issues with this, but the way it was connected and the force of the exhaust hitting the ground underneath made the car incredibly vibrate-y at cruising rpms. which was awkward to say the least.

3. Making the exhaust exit out the side(it had to be the driver side because of where exhaust and driveshaft are) was tricky because the last place I could connect the exhaust comfortably to the frame was in the center. My exhaust terminates right at the outside edge of the driver side door (I didn't want it too close to the wheels/tires). and given the amount of uneven roads, driveways, speedbumps etc here in southern california there was an almost inevitable low point that would scrape against the ground.. which was also kinda awkward.

4. Tying into the last statement, since the exhaust came out of the driver side, it became a lot louder on the driver side greatly reducing sensory input to the driver...

So that said. I would definitely choose magnaflow again, and a side exit is ideal (cuts off a lot of unnecessary weight) however, accomplishing this task is TRICKY if you want to have a cat, a muffler & glass packs is going to be a very tight fit indeed. imo glass packs are way ricey sounding.. no offense of course.

Thanks for the input. I'm hoping yours was loud because of the lack of a cat. Most cars get louder and higher pitched not running a cat. Plus, you were running 3" which is bigger than the 2.5" setup i am planning. So, i dont think it'd be too loud. I was going the have the pipe shoot the exhaust out front of the left rear tire perpendicular to the car.

Magnaflow isnt a glasspack? I want to know what round muffler would kill the most sound that will fit along the center section of the car.

Magnaflow does make a round muffler, Summit has them PN MPE-14416 2.5 in and out and core. $63.95

I saw the magnaflow, but i thought it was just a glasspack. It's 2-3 times the price of a glasspack... so Does it last longer or do a better job quieting the exhaust? Does it sound good?

My exhaust is 3" from the O2 back. High flow cat, 24" glass pack/resonator and no muffler. It's reasonably quiet. Doesn't attract much attention unless I rev it up.

Magnaflow Round mufflers are excellent - I had one on my '89 Mazda Rx7 Turbo-II - sounded great! Even with the buzzy exhaust tone of the rotary engine, it added a deep, mellow tone. Not to mention, they fit in small spaces, like where my two catalytic converters should have been. :thumb:

I'd get 2 generic resonators (glasspacks). Put one right after the cat (or in place of the cat if you're going catless) and one right before the outlet. I think it sounds really nice that way, quiet at idle and loud when you step on it.

Do you have/have you heard this setup? How long do glasspacks last on DSM's?

12" Dynomax bullet + 24" Dynomax Thrush Glasspack on mine. All 2.5", the exit has been modded slightly since this first iteration to give me more ground clearance.

You can see the clearance issues I had here.

I'll have to try and get some decent video of it.

Here's some videos of mine from November (last time it was on the road)

Tractionless in first and second in the cold

You can hear me get on it in first right as the camera guy turns around.

Is that also an SSQV?

Venting?

Yes the car's fwd.

It's an SSQV vented using a blowthrough MAFT setup.

Contrary to the smoke in the first video, I've not converted the car to diesel power :D
