The reason im asking is because i really would like to monitor my fuel pressure before and after i upgrade my fuel lines to -8 from tank to rail, and the price of the gauges is almost what im going to pay to upgrade my lines and its rediculas. i was finding electrical fuel pressure gauges as low as 170.00$ and i found an electrical oil pressure gauge (full sweep) sending unit included for 44.95$

and electrical fuel pressure gauges from around 200$

The reason i think i would be able to substitute the gauge is because oil and fuel are both petrollium based and i have been using a mechanical oil pressure gauge under my hood for a good while now, and i would much much rather just have to put a sending unit in line instead of running a fuel line inside my car and possibly have it leak.

I would think that you will get an inaccurate reading due to the viscosity of the oil comapred to the fuel. although they are petroleum based liquids fuel is still more corrosive than engine oil.

If it were me I would not chance it. maybe they are higher priced for a reason..

good question though.

I understand the viscosity of the oil makes it nearly a completely different liquid then the fuel but , pressure is pressure right? and corrosion could possibly be an issue but since its going to be just a sending unit inline with an-8 fuel lines i dont think corrosion will be an issue although i could be wrong.

im just bored at my new job which is a&d high performance and just looking around at all the stuff here has me thinking :)

The pressure transducers that electric oil / fuel pressure gauges use should be relatively insensitive to the viscosity of the fluid. Gasoline does tend to be a fair bit more corrosive to various plastics/rubbers, but I would wager you would probably be okay. I have done this in the past (very temporarily) to verify my fuel pressure was okay while diagnosing a bad fuel pump with no issues.

It would certainly be preferable to use an electronic oil pressure sender, rather than plumb a fuel line into the passenger cabin. Just make damn well sure that you mount it such that if it leaks, it leaks in an area where it will do minimal damage. Like, run your fuel line down inside the front frame rail / fender area when you tee in the sender. Just keep it well away from exhaust and any other sources of engine bay heat. You also might want to consider getting some of the foam that coolant hoses are often wrapped in and wrap the whole sender / hose assembly so that if/when it leaks, it just leaks slowly out of the foam and onto the ground rather than spraying violently onto something possibly hot.
