I heard someone talking at work today and a guy mentioned that with an external wastegate you wont need a bov. Is this true? :-/

A wastegate is a device that opens once a certain intake pressure is reached to maintain this pressure (it gets rid of extra exhaust gases).
A Blow off valve is designed to open once intake vacuum is reached in order to prevent compressor surge (air hitting the compressor wheel going in the other direction)
While it is true, a bov is not a necessity for the car to run (especially on an auto) it greatly increases compressor life (among other things)
In short, get a BOV, think about it, even shep runs a BOV
Shep does not run a bov on his new set up
I just read that too but from the pic I didnt see anything, he very well could have one hiding somewhere.
