Fabricating Oil Fill Cap Gasket

My cap was leaking so I did this:
I took out the old, hardened, cracked gasket and cut the same shape out of the plastic cover to my coffee can, then I cut up an old bicycle tire inner tube to that same shape, smeared some glue onto it and stuck it onto my coffee ring. I put it into my cap and put it back on the engine........... and it doesn't leak! I did notice though, that the rubber inner tube cannot take the high heat and antifreeze chemicals very well, and starts to get mushy after a few weeks. I'm going to try to find some other type of sheet rubber to use.... or anything else that I stumble across that won't get mushy.
I guess-timate that the labor cost for what I described above would be about $300.00. . . . AND how much does a new cap cost again?

I picked up a gasket maker sheet from AutoZone where you can cut out your own dimension. This gasket maker is used on exhaust systems however, I found out it could not hold up to the hot temperatures of the exhaust stream. I did replace my oil cap gasket quite a few times however there was still leakage from the cap.

So I decided to cut out a gasket and it seems to be holding up just fine. Been about 5 months now, still no leak..
