allen head in motor

i need to know if there is any other way to get the allen head that takes off the head bolts out of my motor fell in one of the oil passages. would it go into the oil pan ? if so could i get it out of the oil plug? or would i need to take the oil pan off to get it? need help asap
 
Sounds like you want to get this done fast. If you cant get it back out with a magnet just pull the oil pan off. I highly doubt you will ever get it out the drain hole.
 
Is the block still in the car? I'm not familiar with what the situation is, but I would put it on an engine stand and turn it upside down while trying to use a magnet. I don't think that you could do it with an automotive magnet, unless it's strong.
 
If magnet doesn't work but you can see it you can use "alligator forceps". They are hard to find but a fantastic tool to have. They are used in in medicine for foreign body removal from ears, nasal passages, etc. Do a google search.

Another trick you can attempt is put a drop of super glue on the tip of a wooden skewer or something similar and try to stick it to the object then pull it out. Obviously only works if you have a straight path to it and it's not coated in oil.
 
There are also 3-pronged flexible extraction tools at most hardware/autoparts stores. It's a flexible shaft about 2 feet long with a syringe-like control on one end. If you push the plunger in, three prongs poke out the other end and flare apart. When you let off the plunger, the three prongs pinch together and then retract into the shaft.

I dropped a zip-tie into the oil return passage once, and it went straight through the block into the pan. I tried everything including a shop-vac with a home-made nozzle attachment, but I ended up taking the pan off. It was laying right on the pan.

If it fell through, you gotta take off the oil pan. The major pain in this with an AWD is that you have to pull off the downpipe (from the O2 housing), then the transfer case, then unbolt the drivers-side front axle bearing bracket and move it out of the way just to get at all of the pan bolts - atleast I had to.

Hope you can get it out without taking the oil pan off.
