Im finally back in business with an AWD again.. well, kinda. :D

I bought a 90 talon tsi awd today for $600. It had a broken timing belt. So, as soon as I get it home me and a buddy start taking the head off. Couple hours later, (newbs) the head comes up.. Bad news. 2 valves are melted to the top of the pistons and there are gashes all in the pisons. (I got pictures if anyone is interested.) Rebuild time. Which I probably should have just pulled the motor to begin with considering the 222K on the clock.

So anyway, we are going to pull the motor tomorrow. And since this is my first rebuild, can anyone give me some heads up and pointers?

1. is this rebuild kit any good? I have found others but they are a $100 more. But I dont want to go cheap on it if its not going to turn out well. Ebay Rebuild kit

2. My guess is all the valves have to be replaced but im not sure. How do I know, and do you think it would be cheaper/easier to buy a reman.

3. Should I bore it out? everyone has told me to bore it out. Is it worth it? and if I do that, would I have to tune it or can it run fine with the stock tune?

I have a couple of people that have rebuilt old carb engines before around so I wont be completely lost but they have never touched a fuel injected and are not sure how that works. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like the rebuild kit you are looking at is made by Topline, which is a good stock rebuild component company. I am currently rebuilding my engine with Topline parts, OEM quality.

Boring the engine out will depend on the condition of the cylinder walls. If they are heavily scorred, yes, you will need to bore it out. Have a machine shop inspect the lowest, mid and high points of the walls, and then have them check the condition of the block. If they bore it out, you will need to purchase pistons/rings.

Now, you have a 6 bolt, so a set of Ross/weiseco slugs on your big rods will hold quite a bit of power. If you want to save money for upgrades and do a stock rebuild, Topline makes good quality slugs as well, I am putting them in my engine.

Good luck!

Just a heads up too Slowboy sells that very same kit for $160. Once you get the engine out and can get a good look at everything you can decide where to go from there. Check the cylinder walls really good for any signs of scoring or pitting. If there is a lip on the top of the wall it will need to be bored. Also when you get the head stripped down be sure to check the valve guides for signs of cracking. The motor I picked up not to long ago jumped time and bent every valve and all of the valve guides were cracked too.

Deck the block and resurface the head to ensure a quality seal with new gasket . Also the 90 throttle body is different so be sure you get correct gaskets . You should also replace the tb seals . Arp head studs and the normal timing maint... Bsek , frontcase/oil pump , crank pulleys . Blah blah blah . You know the drill .

Thank for the responses guys.

What kind of horsepower gains am I looking at with boring out like say .40 over? Is it even worth it? Also should I remove the balance shaft?

Balance shaft , yes . I would personally not bore to .40 . My Talon is my daily driver . I would like to know that if something goes wrong again , I still have more clearance to use the block again . If you go .40 on the first shot and have issues related to pistons / block . Time to buy another .

alright.

When I pull out the motor I want to get rid of all unnecissary equipment. This is not going to be my daily, it is going to be my weekend/fun car. So the a/c and cruise control will be gone. What else can I remove from the car (wires/parts etc.) that can "clean up" the engine bay that are not necissary aside from the free mods. I do want to keep power steering and heat however.

ABS? I think ABS sucks so badly on 1g's that it's not even worth having.

As far as eliminating things go the A/c, Cruise control will clear up a lot of room. Eliminating the EGR system will also clean up the bay. You can check this thread for the for how to do it.

Other than those few things there not much more to eliminate for a street car. You could move the battery to the hatch and just do your best to re route any wires to clean things up.

Thanks for your help guys. Im sure I will have more question as the build progresses. I got a quote today. $400 for a head rebuild and the block cleaned/honed/bored etc.

Im actually excited. haha.
