The whole purpose of the catch can is to isolate the crankcase pressure and gases from the intake manifold. By connecting the catch can to the manifold you defeated that purpose. You are actually increasing pressure to the crankcase instead of relieving it. Disconnect the line going to the intake manifold and put a filter on the catch can.

Now, do you know the purpose of the line on those non-diy catchcans, going from the top to bottom?
 
Do you have a picture or a link? I don't think I've ever seen one.
 
that top to bottem line on the can is to see if there is any oil built up in the can
