I have a 97 eagle talon tsi awd. The car had been losing charge on the old battery and i had to jump the car every few days i left it sit. After replacing the battery the car held a charge fine and worked fine until about a week later. I was sitting in a parking lot and left the car idle for about 5 minutes and then shut the car off. When i returned about 5 minutes later to start the car it just clicked. A friend and i push started the car to get it going and then the car would start fine. My car would start about 5 or 6 times in a row usually and then not turn over again so i'd have to push it. After about 3 of these series of events i am finally looking at the car. I noticed that when i replaced the battery i also did not attach the ground wire from the starter to the battery. I figured this must be the problem but after reattaching the ground the car still just clicks. Any ideas or suggestions? Possibly starter or selenoid? Thanks!

Could be but first check if a bad cable or cable connection problem.

1) Did you clean off and reconnect the negative battery cable to the body as well as the starter mounting bolt?

2) Disconnect both battery terminals and clean both them and the battery posts with sandpaper. Put back on and retighten. Also clean and tighten positive terminal on starter if you can get at it. Then if still not working, with car not running measure the voltage at the battery while the key is in off, on, and start positions and report back.

3) If still have problem, possibly a short? To test for a short place a small 12V light bulb (eg. tail, marker, cabin light bulb) between one of the battery posts and everything that is attached to it. Turn everything off and close doors. On is short.

4) Is the clutch pedal position switch working? If it's stuck on, starter will not engage due to starter relay then activating. (Can just disconnect clutch pedal position switch to fix this)

5) Is charging system working? When the car is/was running what voltage do you read at the battery?

It could be your starter.. my buddys 1g did that it would work fine then it wouldnt start the next time... he put a new starter in and it has worked fine since... hope this helps
