I have a 1996 eagle talon tsi, my transmission was slipping and i didnt have the money to fix it so i kept driving it, when i finally got the money to do the rebuild the mechanic rebuilt it and after the rebuild it was stuck in limp mode or 3rd gear .my transmission was stuck in limp mode for 5 months we finally figured out the problem to get it out of third gear; it was shifting fine then about a day or two after whenever the car would get hot overdrive would start acting up it would not go to 4th gear but if i take off overdrive it drives without slipping. if i drive with overdrive for awhile and put it back on it will go to fourth. The transmission shop has rebuilt overdrive atleast 5 times but it still continues to slip when the car gets hot ,does anyone know why? the car shifts perfect until the transmission gets hot and the slipping only happens with overdrive. no one can figure the problem out please help. they changed the valve body twice , tryed 3 new transmission computers, all the selenoids where changed and performance clutch and regular cluthches where both tryed.

Sounds like your mechanic didn't do something right. Try and call IPT or go to their forums. When I had mine rebuilt it worked perfectly fine.

I believe the trans is electrically controlled on 96. The 3-4 shift solonoid may not be working properly and lock up may not occur. Solonoid packs should be replaced when trans are rebuilt however the solonoids packs are sometimes expensive and to remain competitive tranny shops don't usually replace them. Solnoids 1-2 3-4 epc, tcc and others add at least a couple of hundred dollars to rebuild and sometimes even more.

the shift selenoids where replaced twice already. and what else is inside overdrive besides the clutches and the drums how can the mechanic rebuild it wrong 5 times.

You have bad end cluches most likely, as to why they are failing time and time again is anyones guess, find a new "mechanic". Simply put a mechanic shouldnt be trying to rebuild a transmission, you need a transmission tech to take care of it, way too many things to go wrong inside of there for some monkey to be learning at your expense.

It sounds like the clutch pack. At this point, you might want to send the whole piece out to be rebuilt to ensure its done right. IPT or TRE.

I have already done that.

This seems minor but I believe it's the cause.

Thats the kickdown servo switch and its not your problem, there are several ways to screw up the end clutch rebuild, again I would have to guess someone messed something up during the install or if they had your valve body apart something might have gotten messed up in the valve body, without using a pressure gauge to check pressures theres no way to know if the valve body is out of whack, so again my best guess is the end clutch is slipping and getting glazed.

Thank you, I had no clue what it was but my fluid leak stems from that. That's my quick 30 minute project. I hope it's just I put the piston gasket on flipped around. It didn't go back in that easy. I had to use a c clamp. I'm going strip down the end clutch again. Ipt had sent a second gasket set. I'll make a drawing or take in depth pictures of the piston gasket. I truly think that's what happened, now. Weekend here I come with a few uart of food to boot. You were a great help. And I'll keep posting updates and questions.

Yeah forgot to mention no problems with OD off and able to move no problems shifting or downshifting. Gears 1-3. When OD did go out it threw a TPS code. Which has been replaced and reset.

How much fluid should come out when I pop off the end clutch cover? I don't have much , just the puddle in the bottom.

Very little fluid will lay in the end clutch area, that is one of the shortfalls of that design and is a contributing factor in its short life.
