My left caliper has very high resistance compared to the right when i was installing new rear pads. I took off the upper cap for the guide bolt and saw that the bolt head was deeply recessed and i couldn't get a socket on it to remove the caliper and lubricate the rear guide.

How can i remove the upper guide bolt for servicing?

There a couple of solutions I have found that work for this problem:

1. The only socket I have found that will fit is a deep well snap on 1/4 inch drive. If I remember correctly I believe the size is 10mm. This is sometimes a hit or miss. The socket I had was from an older set. I have found many newer snap on sockets will not work.

2. Take a dremmel tool and round the hole out slightly with a cylindrical cutting stone. A few rotations will do the trick. This I have also found is the easiest method.

3. Remove the entire hold bracket with the caliper attached. You should be able to remove the bottom bolt from the caliper and hinge the caliper upward to remove the pads without ever even removing the top fastener.

Hope this helps...

I've found it easier to take the rear caliper off of the car to do the entire rebuild.

I was able to fit a 1/4" drive thin walled socket and remove both the top and bottom guide bolts and sleeves. Once cleaned and greased up, the assembly is moving as it should. Thanks guys.
