First off, I have spent hours reading posts about performing the power steering delete 'mod' in our cars. My friend and I are considering doing this mod for several reasons and to clarify before I get flamed, I will list them in order of importance to us:
#1: One less thing in the engine bay (cleaner look)
#2: One less pulley running off the crank (.25 hp gain, wohoo!)
#3: No more leaky banjo (saves alternator)
#4: Weight savings (less weight = better)
#5: Just because we can
Although we are 1st gen owners and have the option of switching to a manual rack, we are not keen on the idea of a rack that is 4 turns lock to lock as apposed to 2.5 with the power rack. Another motivation for this is to possibly help out the 2g owners who have or are considering removing their power steering for the same reasons stated above but don't have the luxury of installing a manual rack since one was never made.
Everyone knows that you can simply remove the power steering components and loop the lines at the rack – thus affectively removing the power assist feature. The downside to removing the power assist is the gearing ratio of the power rack. It makes maneuvering at low speeds / parallel parking very difficult (but not impossible for those of us with muscles). This is especially true if it's your daily driver.
The next obvious question then becomes, can the rack be further modified to improve the steering response and ease of maneuvering at low speeds without changing gearing ratios? Well...we think so and wanted to share our ideas with the rest of the community to get some feedback. Although everything looks good on paper, it may not be practical given the time required for the necessary modifications.
So I encourage everyone to take a look at the images below. Perhaps some Wiseman can chime in with their .002 dollars
