So far so good with the turbo setup!(MY EVOIII 18G w/ 15 degree clipped TD05 Turbine wheel)

When I first bolted it on, it was very quiet spooling up and while in boost (15 PSI) all I could hear was a suction noise... now, I've got like 400 miles on it, the spool is getting louder and louder... IS IT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT? This is my first NEW TURBO. All the other turbos I've installed were USED and they made the LOUD SPOOLING whine off the bat. specially the super 16G, it was the loudest turbo i've ever owned, it spooled like a beast!!!

Is it true that the older and more used the turbo gets, the louder it gets also???? I just wanna make sure my turbo is not prematurely wearing out... since it already is starting to SPOOL LOUDER after 400 miles.. on 15psi...

THANKS!!!

First of all, I think you mean you have a EVOIII 16G not 18G. But I think the sound you're describing is normal. My 14b is running strong and sounds pretty loud. Worst case scenario, the sound you're hearing is a boost leak. If you wanna make sure you're turbo is ok, check for shaft play.

mine is pretty loud but theres no MAS, its the FP 4" intake to a HKS filter.

does it sound bad? or does it sound good just getting louder?

and is there such thing as a evo 3 18g? is that some hybrid evo 3 housing with diff wheel or something? or typo?

Refer to this thread to get up-to-date on Mark's interesting little turbo. :)

As Deadly Blaze mentioned, check the turbo for shaft play, and while doing so, inspect the compressor wheel fins to make sure they're not rubbing on the compressor housing inlet. If they are, it could be causing the sound you're hearing. If you can, try to check the turbine wheel and housing while you're at it, although that's a bit harder than checking the compressor side. I always advise anyone running an Evo3 GT turbo to regularly check for shaft play due to a notoriety of them failing.

Edit: Also, check for boost leaks by performing a boost leak test. You may be developing a leak that is getting worse. If the compressor housing was taken off the turbo, the compressor housing seal may be leaking, either at the O-ring or the snap-ring. A boost leak test will help determine that.

Thanks for all the replies, I have checked and no BOOST LEAKS. Thanks MrBoxx for the reference to my thread for better understanding. Its not a typo, its an 18G compressor wheel and Clipped 15 degree TD05 turbine wheel stuffed into a ported EVOIII GT housing.

Just wondering about the sound because at first it was very quiet and now there is a slight spool up sound similar to the other turbos i've had experience with. I am just wondering if it is true about "THE OLDER AND MORE USED THE TURBO GETS, THE LOUDER THE SPOOL WILL BE" specially if it is a Floating bearing/bushing type.

I checked for shaft play, I do not feel any friction and i do not think that the compressor wheel is touching the housing.

Thanks all for the replies..

Mark

In my experience, the only time they get louder is when they start having more and more play. I had a 16G that ran big boost every day and it made the same spool sound from day one with no change.

Also, with respect to your other thread about compressor covers, the Super 16G cover that you had was a more efficient design for cooler IAT than the EVO III cover. That's the one I'd use in a downflow configuration to create less friction in the air charge.

My 14b (unknown milage) and brand new Big 16G did the same thing. It may be natural, but I can't say for sure. Double check your exhaust gaskets to see how well they are holding up. If they are fine, there is no leak, and there is no play, then I wouldn't worry about it.
