OK so all of a sudden my car is smoking like crazy, it's like a smoke screen.

I did all the normal ck's and when i removed the j pipe hose off the turbo i found that the inside on the hose is coated in oil, i ck to see if there was any shaft play and there was none.

So my question is where can the oil be coming from is there a seal inside the turbo that's leaking and also is there any other way that oil can get inside the hose, i'd rather the turbo be junk then my rings or something like that being bad since replacing a turbo is pretty easy for me.

more than likely you blew an oil seal on your turbo...if its the original turbo I'd bet money on it...if it were a ring you would still have the smoke but the oil wouldn't be in your j pipe, as its before the cylinders...oil only travels downstream...

Is there any oil in the pipe leading to your throttle body? Before you jump to any conclusions give that a check, my buddy had the same issue and it ended up being his oil lines for the turbo, I can't remember whether it was his return or feed line, but the line was loose, he replaced the gaskets and it fixed his problem.

Thanks for the help guys i'm going to pull my lower intercooler pipe and see how much oil is in there

I had the same problem last week, there was so much smoke I couldn't back up because I couldn't see. I can guarantee you that it's the turbo seals, there's really only two ways to get oil into the IC pipes, blow by, or bad seals.

BUN

Yeah it's probally the seals since i have a aftermarket intake so there's no way for blow-by to get into the ic pipes

How are your PCV and breather routed? Are you having excessive crankcase pressure related issues like dipstick popping out? Have you check and make sure the oil return line isn't kinked or clogged?

My pcv valve setup is still stock meaning the end of the pcv valve connects to the intake manifold and the other hose that used to go to the stock intake hose is now lengthed and just vents to the atmosphere i put one of those in line filter to catch some of the oil though.

I do have some blow by thought since my dipstick does pop out on ocassion and if i remove my oil cap while it's running you can tell that there's blow by.

So i really cant tell if it's blown turbo seals or my rings going bad i know that some blowby is normal i removed the lower IC pipe and there was a coating of oil in the intercooler but it wasn't like alot of oil but i guess you don't need alot of oil to create smoke

This is what I was getting at:

1. There is no turbo seal like one would think a "seal" should be, it doesn't completely seal the oil passage as anyone who has done a static boost leak test would know. The only way the seal can be damaged is with excessive shaftplay.

2. A leaking oil seal without shaftplay are usually cause by excessive oil pressure/volune in the CHRA. This can happen in several ways, excessive feed or defective return. Smoking issues like this can be temporary if the caused is discovered and fixed before the excessive pressure in the CHRA leads to shaftplay.

Let's talk about the causes of deficient oil return:

1. Simple and easy to find, a kinked or clogged oil return line.

2. Excessive crankcase pressure backing up the oil return capacity, which I think very likely is your problem since your dipstick pops out.

Now let's talk about causes of excessive crankcase pressure:

1. Defective pcv valve allowing intake pressure to enter crankcase.

2. Defective valve stem seals allowing intake pressure to enter crankcase.

3. Excessive blow by, poor ring seal.

4. Rerouting and disabling of your PCV system.

All these things are interrelated to each other but if you have oil in LICP but no shaftplay, these would be the directions I would take.

Ok well here's a update i removed my smic and a good amount of oil came running out of the intercooler so i guess that my turbo is probally junk.

I'll take another look and see if there is any shaft since i might have just over looked it does any body have a idea of how much shaft play can a turbo have.

OK here's another update i removed my intake pipe and ck the shaft play on the turbo,i'm not real sure how much shaft play is ok.

There's some up and down shaft and there's a little more side to side shaft play but if i'm not mistaken it's ok for there to be some side to side and up and down.

Now as for shaft play in and out i had to grab a pair of plier's to make sure it wasn't my fingers slipping but there is some in and out shaft play i'm not sure the exact amount but it's very little but it's enoughto tell it's moving.

So my question is how much is alowed i was told if there was any in and outthat the turbo was junk but i want to be sure about these.

Ok so after checking around i think the turbo is probally bad, i Just have on other quick question i know that i'm probally getting some blow by since my oil dip stick keeps poping out.

So how much blow by is enough to cause oil leak past the seal in the turbo i'm pretty sure it's the turbo thats causing the probelm but i just want to be sure.
