Sherwood Park,
Ive been reading about swapping a 1991+ tranny into a 1990, and I CANNOT wrap my brain around it. Im looking at buying a Galant vr4 awd 5 speed tranny. I have a 1990 awd 5 speed in my car now. Some people say swap input shafts, while others say swap output shafts. WHICH ONE! I bascily want to know if it will work with my stock transfer case. Different gear ratio's doesnt concern me, nor does the work involved. Someone just tell me what I have to swap to make this car roll!

Thanks:talon:

You'll have to count the splines on the output shaft of the new transmission. 90 transmissions use a 22 spline output shaft and transfer case while most 91+ use a 23 spline. I say most because half way through 91 they switched to the 23 so earlier 91's will have 22 spline units. When I did mine I just got the T-case and transmission together (both 23 spline) and put it in. The only other thing I had to do was get a shifter base from a 91 and up. I used my 90 shifter cables and the shifter brackets that came on the 23 spline transmission.

Thanks for the info. Only problem is the transfer case that came on the tranny was sold seperatly.
Anyone know the right answer to swapping input shafts?

It's a real PITA and involves taking the transmission case apart (if I'm remembering right). I tried it with mine before I got the 23 spline t-case. It would probably be easier to just get the 23 spline t-case. I got mine on ebay for about $70 shipped. I've got 2 of them here if your interested PM me.

Found out the tranny is a 22 spline, so im good to go for that.
Anyone else with info for input shaft swapping?

If the tranny is a 22 spline you can just use your stock T-case. Everything will bolt up fine.
