Is the "pin out" diagram of the ECU pins, or the wire plastic plugs?

Pin out make it sound like the pins coming out of the ECU, but if you really look at the drawing it looks more like the wire plug you insert into the ECU...

At first look thing didn't seem to line up color for color as described, but I went ahead and made my cuts to the wire harness. Once you really get in there and verify some of the surrounding wires you can begin to get your bearings and confidently make your connections.

If someone else stumbles across this thread; here are some tips to help you out.

- The "pin out" diagrams are not of the ECU as the name mite suggest, but is a drawing of the plugs them selfs. Thats a must to know and took me a minute.

- I have both Haynes and the Chilton manuals, and on any other day would recommend the Haynes hands down to the Chilton for mechanical reference. But today, the Chilton came through and was the only of the two books to give a detailed color code lay out of the ECU connections. For reference, the ECU is called "MFI control unit" in your Chilton and can be found on pg 6-49. Don't be fooled by Chilton's non numerical order to it lay out. The drawing still coincides with your "pin outs" plug numbers.

One last tip, and I don't know if this is worth worrying about for any one else, but I wanted to make reinstalling the stock ECU as easy as possible if the need ever came up. In stead of the one time use butt connectors to make my connections, I used insulated wire connectors instead. The male and female, one slides into the other type, so I can simply put them back in there original locations if the stock set up is ever needed.

As I've posted many times before. You don't cut these wires to swap them. You release the locks and retainers like shown in the Tech Article and move them. It takes me about 30 seconds to swap 6 and 14 when I'm testing a 90 ECU in my car.

People seem to have a problem understanding the ECU pinouts, getting confused by the fact that you count the pins looking at the back of the connector where the wires come out, just like you do looking into the pins on the ECU.

This is what the VFAQ and service manuals are trying to show you. Ignore that this is a 1G ECU and connector. The point remains the same.

The mating connector from the harness is then numbered looking at the back of the connector where the wires come out.
