Winnipeg,
I am looking to get a 50 trim turbo. I am looking at the PTE 5031.. I want to know if there is a huge difference between the DBB and SCM versions of this turbo and if the price tag justifies them..

Second do most people running these turbo's run External gates or are they fine with internal..

Third.. if people do run external gates on these turbo's what is the most popular type of manifold for this application.. SBR Cast manifold looks nice..

Thanks for any input.

Cheers,
Chris.

Hey, I run a PTE SCM5031e. I see 20-22lbs of boost by 3800 in third gear. I think the DBB is few hundred RPM's sooner depending. I have heard the DBB's really shine when it comes to transient boost response, meaning in between shifts. I have heard the DBB models recover boost in between shifts alot better. I have not noticed a problem with my non DBB because I use DSMLink and NLTS. I think they both have around the same max airflow, so no difference there. Just to give you a idea, with a Magnus and Web Cams I see 46lbs of air flow at 21-22lbs of boost and 51lbs of airflow at 26lbs of boost. With the stock 1G intake manifold and 2G stock cams I was seeing 38lbs of airflow at 21lbs of boost. I think that it is a AWESOME turbo upgrade, blows a E316G away and it is a pump gas dream.
In regards to your question about the wastegate, they will creep on the internal. The internal can hold higher boost ok, but not perfect. It gets worse as you mod more... cams, SMIM, very open down pipe and exhaust all make it more work for the wastegate. I would not count on the internal wastegate for anything under 22psi or I think it will creep. I use a Tial 38mm mounted on the manifold. I would recommend against the o2 mounted external because the passages and corners to the gate still promote creep issues. The SBR piece looks like a nice piece, but is it still on backorder? It is costly also. I had a flange welded on a stock 2G exhaust manifold and it is great, cheap to. By the way, a Tial 38mm held 10lbs of boost during my motor break in solid all the way to redline, so no need for anything bigger then a Tial 38mm. I hope this helps your decision...

I was thinking about just getting a flange welded onto the stock exhaust manifold. But how hard is it to weld? Is it cast iron? If it is not that hard to weld I would probably go that way for cost effectiveness. Maybe get an evoIII manifold and get a flanged welded onto that.

Would you happen to have any pictures of your exhaust manifold/wastegate setup that I could use as a reference?

I already have a Tial 38mm. I was wondering if I should sell it or not, but I guess now I wont.

Thanks,
Chris.

50 trims are awsome turbos. The internal gates seem to work fine on the PTE turbos, unless your planning on running big boost I would stick to the internal gate.

It is cast iron and it needs to be welded correctly. I forgot what it was called but it was some sort of a stick weld, ****** Stick weld, I cant remember the first word. Just take it to a welder/machine shop and they can hook it up for you. Bring them your manifold and Flange... Here is a pic of mine.

Its not a perfect pic because I took it for another thread about heatwraping WG dumptubes and LICP.
