Hello all, I've been debating this for a while and now have the means to go ahead with it.

My debate is between maft original, and maft gen2. I know you need maft original to interface with dsmlink if i eventually go with that, but i'm not sure if you can use gen2 to interface.

My plan is to eventually go with dsmlink, but thats a while down the road (next summer maybe).

So my question is, whats the better option for now? Maft so i'm set for dsmlink, or Gen2 so i can lay down a decent tune for now until i get the link.

I'm not looking for a "you should do this . . . ", i'm just looking for some opinions from some fellow tuners.

Hey, I am currently running the gen2 and so far it seems to be a SAFC with a bunch of extra bonuses. I love the fact that you get a low mid and high to tune allowing a smooth transition as you build boost. I also love the wideband tracking. With your wish list and current mods i dont see you needing anything more than the gen2 to tune with. DSMlink is awsome, dont get me wrong. If I where you I would probably just get the get the gen2, wideband, and a logger and call it a day. If you wanted to go with dsmlink i wouldnt even get a maf, i would just use a 2nd gen mas. GM maf is really only needed if you want to hear your blow off valve.
Thats just my 2 cents, good luck!

Honestly, i would run a 2g mas and get dsmlink. The maft stuff doesn't give you much gains if any at all. I had a gm maf on my car and switched back to the stock mas when i got dsmlink. Car runs waaayyyy better.

The other side of this though, is that i don't want to have to spend THAT much on the link. Because my mods don't warrant it yet. At all.

I'm running a 14b, with bolt-ons. Im not even sure i want to take the car that far anyway, i just want a fun street car.

I also don't want to have to buy a new intake pipe for a 2gmas, when i can just run the gm maf i already have and chop the uicp i already have.

I agree though about gen2, i think thats where im going to go with this. Although i did just spend all that time recently making a hardpipe for my BOV return. Oh well.

My only concern with maft is the issues i hear about with idle. Right now i've got some idle flux on cold starts, but once it's warm it's fine, i just don't want to have a consistant issue.

I say go with the gm mas...you will always get more power hungry...do it once so you don't have to upgrade later.

p.s. the gm mas is not only for people that want to vent their bov's....thats ridiculous.

These cars are going to idle funny anyway. Basically if I was really interested in running a GM mas I would get the gen2 just because It is also a afc except way better. It should be all that you need to tune a fun street car. It is all i am using and my car is soon to be in the 400 hp range. Also about the idle, the gm mas tells the ecu how much air by using air temperature so until the gm mas warms up the idle is a little high. I just dont think you need dsmlink with you setup. Stick with the Gen2 and you will love it like i do.

Any words of wisdom from the wisemen?

It looks like gen2 is they way i'm going to go, i just don't want that to be a mistake. But out of the other options i have in this pricerange. . . it seems like the best.

I may just be making this harder...but I thought that I read somewhere that a new version of DSMLink is going to come out and you won't need a translator or anything with that...So in that case you could just get the actual MAF sensor and DSMLink. Not sure if this is true, I bet the makers of DSMLink would tell you though.

I heard that too, but wasn't sure when it was going to be an option. I havn't heard a set release of the new version (about time though if you ask me).

Still, i'd like to run something to tune for now and hopefully use my gm maf. The more i think about it though, the less likely i find myself really needing dsmlink on this car. The biggest turbo i'm going to run is a 50trim or a variable of, so 650's (maxed piggyback injectors without a burnt chip) should set me for a while.

I dunno. . . a lot to think about.

Supposidly when V3 of link comes out you will no longer need a translator, but that is not fixed in stone and there is no release date for V3.

As far as opinions go, I am running a the original translator with a 3" gm maf and link and I dont have any real problems that would cause any concern. As far as using intake air temp to tell how much air is moving, on 1gs running a translator you clamp intake air temps.
