Hi, I currently own a '96 Dodge Avenger (a cousin to dsms), and was looking at maybe getting a cheap 1g as a project car. I've been looking for the gsx awd models, but recently came across this.

http://austin.craigslist.org/car/227262185.html

"For sale...1992 Eclipse GS Turbo, 93K miles, auto trans, cloth interior in very good shape, AM/FM/Cassette, factory alloy wheels, great tires, runs strong. Body is in good shape but has the typical black paint fade that you get on a 15 year old car in Texas. tags good thru next year, needs inspection."

I emailed him and its a stock turbo. He bought the car for his son but decided he didn't deserve it so he's selling it.

My concerns are that its fwd and auto, so not really what I was looking for, but would it be a good start? I don't plan on modding past ~250hp. How good are the auto trannies in 1gs? Would it be expensive to build it to transfer more power? Hows the handling vs. a gsx? Should I just keep looking for a gsx/tsi awd?

Dsm newbie here, and I could use some advice, thx! :coy:

Automatics are hard to gauge. I go to school with a kid that only got about 101k miles out of his auto before it started taking out bearings. Hard to say. Best thing is to check it and the fluid out to check the condition of the tranmission. FWD and Auto aren't a bad combo. It will keep you in boost through all of your shifts and should help some with tire spin. I believe the company that makes all of the stuff for our auto transmissions is IPT. Check out Eric's auto Talon that works for AMS. It's AWD but he should be able to get you some pointers. I would go for the car if the price is right.

There are your built auto options.

www.amsperformance.com is where you will find Eric's car.
I'd offer him $1500 for it.

If you not going over 250whp than the auto will be fine. They can handle some good power. I hate autos so for that reason I would not buy the car. Also the AWD drives have way better traction. FWD to me is wrong wheel drive unless your buying it for snow traction purpose's. I dont agree with building a FWD car fast because thats not what it was intended for. When you launch the weight distributes to the rear tires giving you traction on the rear. Now with FWD all the weight comes off the front tires and causes you to spin. So they can make auto cross cars and thats about it. AWD for drag and street cars is what you want.

I'll have to check that out if I go look at the car. Good point about the boost through shifts. I'm just concerned about the trans, b/c I know in my auto avenger the a604 isn't known to be the best at power transfer and I wanted to know if the auto in the 1g was better quality. thanks for the info!

thats what I wanted origionally, but good quality awds are hard to find around here..

Yes that is the main difference. Also now when you get some power in that FWD you will have traction problems through all gears, not just off a roll. Also the power in a turbo can hit real hard so lets say for example you are getting on the gas around a turn. Then the boost hits and the front tires let loose. you get tons of over steer. Its well worth looking for an AWD over a FWD even if it takes time.

sounds good, don't really need a project right now anyway, goin to college. may try to find one for around summer time.

Once I see something better I'll be back! thanks thus far.

Well the guy sent me some more pics of the car, and I noticed something off..

Its a turbo.

I thought the same thing when my 91 gst didnt have the "T" on it. But it said dohc 16v turbo. I guess that was normal for the 91's and 92's, not sure about the 93's and 94's.

well I guess it makes sense then since its a 92. thx

The GS-T didnt come out untill the 2g. The 1g's where GS-Turbos. And none of the 1g's every said GS-T like the 2g, but yes its a turbo.

Now I have a question why do all the 1g eclipse bumpers start to warp like this one?
