I recently bought a trans from junkyard, ive drove it for about 3-4weeks. now when it cold and the clutch is not pressed it rattles and makes noise that i can hear across the street. :barf: It sounds like a rattle right under end cover so I tighten up the 36 mm bolt on the upper shaft, and it did nothing to help. My shifter moves most in 4th and little in other gears ,I've read that some bearing is bad when your shifter moves, right?. So my real question is that since there is a 6 month warranty, should i take it back and tell them that it is no good and i want a different one,or money back?

I have the same sound basically. When i press my clutch in it goes away completely. I have my car at the shop right now getting it checked out. From what i was told it is the throw out bearing. But it could possibly be the input shaft bearing(which i hope mine isn't) I am having the tranny taken off and a new clutch, flywheel and tob installed. If it is making that i would say yes do take it back and have them check it out to see what is wrong with it. I should hear from the mechanic tomorrow about what is wrong with mine. If it is the same which it sounds like i will post that here.

A very good place to start. If it makes noise in every gear but fourth, it's likely counter gear bearings. They usually fail first for some reason. If it jumps out of fourth, it's probably the input bearing as fourth is right next to it. Either way, it's cheaper at that point to replace rather than repair. A used trans in my area is from 350 to 650 depending on how bad you really need it.

Good Luck

Yea my TOB rattles like a mofo. but only until my car warms up and only when the clutch is not depressed. Ive been driving like this for a little over a year now. In your case i would get it checked out just to make sure.

My original transmission failed due to this. Oops.

Something to look at.

Ok the sound i had that seems to be the same as you i just confirmed it was the tob! Got a new one put in along with new clutch and flywheel and the sound is gone! Would make me think that the sound you have is the same. Sounds like marbles banging around right? IF it moves around and such as others stated than would think there is a good chance it is input shaft related.
