Seperating axle and carrier?

Its not pressed in is it, because I cant get it out for the life of me. I've pryed, pulled and used a big hammer and it WILL NOT seperate so I can go exchange my core and replace it. Anyone got any tips??
 
You need to explain a little better for me to understand wht 2 pieces you are trying to separate. By carrier, do you mean carrier bearing as in the front driver side AWD axle?
.....wait you mean out of the transmission? Use a wide flat head screwdriver and tap it between the axle cup and the transmission until it pops out. If it sticks I tap it in a little and leave the screwdriver wedged between. Then I tap around the cup on the top and bottom until it comes out.
 
Sorry, the description did kind of suck. I circled the pieces that will not seperate, I thought you just pryed on em a little bit and they seperated but it's not working for me at all. Also it is already out of the car.

You need a bench clamp (or something else to hold the carrier bearing securely in place) and a mallet (not a ballpeen hammer).

With the axle held vertically and the hub side pointing down, use the mallet to tap down on the halfshaft:

Tap evenly around the axle, it will work itself free. Just be sure your toes aren't in the way when you finally knock it loose.
 
Sweet, ill go try that right now. The reason I'm replacin it is because the whole axle hub on that side completely seperated from the actual shaft so it's not as heavy as it once was, LOL, but I'll still watch out for my feet.

For the life of me I couldn't get it out either, even using the method above. I finally took it to a drivetrain shop and they opened the cup and used a press to get it out. They couldn't seperate it without the press either.
 
There is a lock ring on the splined part of the shaft that keeps it mated to the cv cup. A large hammer(I use a 32oz ballpeen) will drive it apart. You can also use a wooden mallet or a brass faced deadblow but a soft faced deadblow or rubber mallet usually will not get it loose. Unsing a steel hammer will only damage the cv cup, not the jackshaft or bearing. This usually isnt a problem if you are replacing the outer cv axle. Drive the cup off of the jackshaft just like illustrated on the diagram above.

:thumb: Did just that, it's amazing just how much of a "usable" core the parts store takes, LOL.
