Burlington,
Hey Guys,
I'm thinking this is a belt or bearing squeal coming from under the hood. When I start the car and drive around, it's a high pitched squeal, seems like a belt. When I put the car into neutral, the squeal isn't as loud. If I drive on the highway for a couple hours and then drive on city roads, the squeal goes away. When I'm rarely driving around one week, the squeal is there. Any ideas? Timing belt? Loos bearing? The car still drives fine though....

Other questions. Taken I get all work done at a shop, how much does it cost for:
- Timing belt replacement
- Alt belt replacement (or any other one that could be the cause of this)
- Bearing replacement

Thanks

Sounds like an alternator or power steering belt, check and see how much play is on each when the car is off and tighten them if needed. Mine only does it when it's really cold or really damp, and only on start up. A shop doing a timing belt will cost a little over $200, sorry don't know about the others.

i heard somewhere on here that it was $1200 to do a timing belt? I have the same problem, go buy a gatorback belt for both of them and replace them. Should take care of the problem.
Should be $25 for the belts. Have a buddy do it for a 12 pack? if not my friend said it might be a little more spendy than it probably should be. id say maybe $200 with labor? you never know with some shops

Timing belt will run around 250-300 if it's just the belt. Tensioners of course more. I would check tightness of power steering and alternator belt first. Check for signs of the belt wearing like glazing and rubber dust on the pulley's.

Have you thought it might be the water pump bearing going out. Mine was squealing I changed all belts and then found out it was the water pump bearing going out.

What about your harmonic dampener/pulley?
Check and make sure (it's the big crank pulley) it Isn't seperating, it might look like its moving side to side or wobbling while the car is running.

You should be able to replace the belts yourself.
There's only a couple bolts you'd have to loosen up.
If you press on the belt, in the center of two of the pulleys, does it deflect more then half an inch?
Are the belts cracked/worn?

Update: I called mitsubishi up here in Canada (gotta get every part shipped up), and it's $180 for the pulley. Then $317 after some bolts and labour included. Apparently they just did this on a car after replacing; timing belt, alternator, water pump to no prevail. this finally fixed it. So im going to take it into them to check if it is the pully then get started on it. Ordering it in the states is $140 so i guess it's $40 for shipping.. nothing to cry about. Thanks ofr your help!!!
