rod and piston broken... Need help

Hello dsm world. This is my first eclipse gst (1997). I am coming over from the whole vtec thing. Anyway I brought this car from a guy and he told me basically the car needs a new engine or rebuilt. Me and my boy took off the oil pan and saw that the rod and piston in the 3rd cyclinder was broken. My question is this. Should i get this one rebuilt or purchase a new engine and get work done to it. I am just looking for my car to have around 300hp when everything is finished. The car is complete stock with around 90k on it. I need some advice since i am new to this dsm world. THX :cry: :cry:
 
As a quick answer, you're probably better off getting a 6 bolt and rebuilding that. No worries that way.

Any motor can walk. The chance of it happening is reduced with a 6 bolt. Also, your motor life is only as good as it is assembled and maintaned. If your going with the 6 bolt route, which I would also advice. Visit this site. www.magnusmotorsports.com Find the article "1g ina2g " it will tell you everything you need to make the motor swap happen.

Do you want a built motor ( pistons/rods/cams/etc) or just a stock rebuild. You can hit 300 hp fairly easily with a stock motor.

But, a stock build with this motor will see you 300hp no problem. Inexpensive bolt ons is all that's really needed. Not like you need to build up the engine.
If your confident enough, Rebuild the motor,It's your cheapest route.
Im sure people will jump in and tell you to do a "6bolt" swap. Which is the early model(89-92) 4g63's that aren't proned to crankwalk(overated), and have stronger rods, bigger intake runners on the head.
But there's pleanty of 7bolts out there, and the likelyhood of a good build crankwalking is insignificent to it not. You can check for crankwalk, which is end play of the crankshaft.
If you want to go that route, you can either find a junkyard motor and rebuild it, or find a used one normaly around 500. You can get a JDM one(i know you know about the JDM, haha) for around 1350.
Or if you want to buy a brand new rebuilt longblock, cost 1150.


It's really up to you. Cheapest option is probably rebuild yours, or find a cheap used one. When you say rod and piston broke, what specificaly do you mean?

The piston is broken completely. OK, I can tell it's easy to make 300 with a few bolt ons. So should i just rebuild my motor head and block?. or go with the 6 bolt has in what everyone is saying. I also what the motor to be built so that later on if i decided to really so up north on the boost.

What?

Are you planning on building this motor yourself? Or having it built by a shop?
If you really want to build it up nice, you might want to do a "6bolt swap" just because the 89-92 big rods, and the head flows better. And with some good pistons and valvetrain you have a really strong motor.

You can build up your 7bolt for cheaper probably still.

FYI, A good stock built motor should hold you up to 400hp, and 25-30psi(w/ a good headgasket and arp studs)

Depends what your budget is. I'd still just do a good build on your 7bolt(providing your rods and crank are good) Just because It'd be cheapest, then you have money for some supporting mods.
 
You dont have to have a built motor to " go north on the boost " TUNING is a major part of it. In a motor you need head studs and a head gasket and you can run 25 lbs of boost if tuned fine. Now granted adding in some cams to that would be very helpfull but 130K + mile dsm's run 20 lbs of boost all day every day.

You can easily do that on a stock headgasket and stock bolts, the other stuff is overrated.
