Hey everyone I am looking to make my daily driver a bit more exciting! I plan to upgrade to the GT Evo 3 Big 16G kit from turbochargers.com with their ported exhaust manifold. My goals are to have snappier, more exciting daily driver w/out concern for racing. I am hoping for some solid ground to go on, maybe even people in similar shoes who have a 16g setup running very reliable and efficient(gas mileage). Only mods I have are boost gauge, k&n filter kit. As of right now to compliment the turbo kit i plan on getting a 190 fuel pump, greddy bov, aluminum intercooler piping, mbc, o2 sensor housing porting.

Do I need to upgrade injectors to 550cc and use safc for 16lbs on the 16g?

What will 16lbs on a 16g feel like compared to the stock t25?

Lots of people say they have to worry about boost creep after replacing the exhaust, cat, and downpipe. Why is this and how can i avoid it?

Will running the stock exhaust components completely bottlekneck the system?

Thanks in advance for replying to any of the previous questions :thumb:

here's my advice...
make sure the wastgate flapper is ported...will eliminate boost creep if you do all the bolt ons...and if i were you i would bump it up to 20lbs and get 650 cc inj...it would be reliable and a little quicker...you need a wideband and logger in order to get a descent tune on it with the safc...i would go ahead and get a front mount on it...u dont have to go all out and get a big one if you only want a more peppy daily driver and you dont plan on going bigger that a 16g...and you will deffinatel feel a difference with that turbo...it will blow the front wheels off!!!

Def go with atleast 650's im runing 680's
You should also get a 3" intake pipe.
As far as exaust a 2.5" down pipe, test pipe and cat back will do fine.Or you could go with the 3" if you want.
Port the wategate flapper
I would highly recomend a boost controller.
A Lighter flywheel and better clutch will give it more power also.
This are some of the mods you should get first so your 16g will have the support it needs to be efficient.

Also just because a car has a turbo doesnt mean the best first mod should be a bigger turbo.
I learned my leason when i upgraded with a 16g first.
I didnt notice much of a diff. until i got all the supporting mods.
You will notice more of a diff. if you get the supporting mods first, instead of the 16g with no supporting mods.
Also do all the free mods and a full service tune-up

well when you open the exaust up it helps the turbo breath. 550s would be good but get an AFC and a pocket logger so you dont mess anything up. exhaust will need to be open and you can find one cheap in the classified ads. go with at least 3 inch cat back and 2.75 inch or 3 downpipe. also upgrade your intake for better airflow. that fuel pump will just do fine. you dont need a front mount you can just run a supra side mount but I always think a front mount looks nice and you get more air. also get the car tuned it will help out a lot with the car.

hey thanks everyone for the quick replys. I am in no rush to upgrade immediately (winter coming) so i will be buying the supplement parts b4 the turbo. Like I said i want it to be reliable and fun, also not too noisy and good on gas! I think that might rule out any of the 3" exhausts. Any recommendations for a quiet exhaust setup?

you can actully still run the 3inch exhaust for the good air flow and just you'se a silencer to quit it down. I think one comes with Apex exhaust but i could be wrong.

You will not be happy without supporting mods. That turbo has a lot of potential and the worst thing about modding is that once you start you won't stop. It will always be "just a little bit more power". I never got really good mileage on my 16g, I think it was because everytime you touch the gas you're in boost. I would always average 18-20, now on the Green I average 25.

you deffinately will not want to full throttle your car at 20 psi and a silencer! you will blow out all the exhaust gaskets and lessen the life of the turbo temendously

I have a 3" Greddy PE Exhaust and it's definitely the best sounding exhaust I've heard on a DSM. It's deep, and not very loud at all. First thing I would buy is the datalogger, SAFC2, and MBC. That way while you're saving up for everything else, you can get a general idea on how to tune the car. Also read around the tunning section of these forums, you can learn a lot on how to tune and read a datalogger. After that I would get the fuel pump and 550s at the same time. If, for any reason at all, you feel like you may upgrade in the future I'd get the 660s and 255fp now just to be on the safe side, you'll thank yourself later when you save yourself several hundred dollars.

Have fun and good luck.

where did you buy the Greddy PE exhaust? Is it discontinued because its not even shown on greddys site?

i have a s16g on my daily driver and went 13.7@97mph on stock fuel at 17psi. You need to be able to log and tune to really get any power out of the bigger turbo. Check my mods and see what i have done...12.8@106 on s16g. If you have any specific questions just ask. I am still on stock fuel pump rewired and 880cc injectors(not needed for this turbo but i plan on going bigger and dsmlink makes tuning for big injectors easy) The 16g is a very capable turbo if you do the right mods and dont waste money on things you dont need.

ive heard the SBR clutches are really good. my buddy has one i forget what model but the pedals not to stiff and it grabs nice and hard.

Hey just wanted to say that i was running the GT for 6months from TC.com and I loved it!! It saw full boost by 3800rpm. I was running 23lbs. So my fuel setup was denso 660s, AFC1,walbro 255 and areomotivefpr. I have moved on to a hahn 20g since last thursday. But the turbo has found a new owner which is one of my boys and his 2gfwd. Let me tell you get some sticky tires man. When boost kicks he roasts 1 and 2 at 18lbs. Besides what a lot of people say about it being knock off I was very pleased, it was the best bang for the buck with allt he upgrades. Good luck!!

I personally drive a gt 16g daily driver.

I would suggest:

AFC
650s
FMIC
3" full exh.
Ported manifold / o2 housing
BOV
Pocketlogger
190 lph
EGT/boost gauge

Or if all else fails check out the upgrade path on this website.

Good Luck :thumb:

Perhaps I am being vague. Specifically my goal is to be around 300whp. What i want are the components that will function best at 300whp (not going to upgrade later). Making 300whp after tuning and still having a car that sounds and looks close to stock (+ is very responsive no drag setup) would be amazing (25+ hwy mpg would also be great)! Right now I am thinking 190 fuel pump, 550 injectors, gt exhaust manifold, ported 02 housing, ported gt evo 16g turbo, 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" apexi WSII exhaust (quiet), greddy bov, safc, datalogger, stock intercooler with new piping.

Is the gt evo 16g perhaps not the right choice? maybe the small 16g would be more efficient for my goals.

For my route, 97 eclipse gst spyder, what does everyone think would be the easiest way to tune my car for the moderate amount of tuning i plan to do?

Maybe instead of getting an AFC I would go to www.dsmchips.com and get Jeff to build you a new ECU that is tuned and you wouldn't have to tune any more if you did not want to. It would be close to the same price and you won't have the AFC stuck somewhere in the cab. I would get the 190lph, 550cc injectors, exhaust like you like, intake, intercooler piping, new intercooler(you can use the stock one but it will hurt your performance), BOV, and either the ECU or AFC and a 16g variant and you will be to your goals. I hope that helps you.

The EVO III 16g is very capable of making 300WHP, but I would suggest some room to grow. You need a datalogger and a boost gauge first! Also, make sure that all of your maintence is up to date, such as timing belt, fluid changes, etc.

You may want to go with a 255lph and an AFPR, but at least rewire your 190. I would definately go with 650cc injectors over the 550's. FMIC would help, but it's not necessary. Also, don't forget a boost gauge.

Gas mileage depends on you. With a good O2 sensor and some driver restraint, you can get suprisingly good gas mileage with a larger turbo. The problem is that most people can't keep their foot out of the throttle. I'm no exception. :p

Hey
I have almost exactley what you are trying to accomplish. I would go with EVO16g...just better than s16g and no ill affects. Take a look at my mod list. I made appox 300awhp according to my traps and ET's the last time at the track. On the 350km drive home from the track i got 32mpg. So there ya go.
Stock intercooler will make it tought to make more than 1 pull without heatsoaking the thing badly. I heatsoak my supra sidemount after about 4 or 5 hard pulls. If you have the money just skip that and go to an fmic but the supra sidemount is working fine for this power level.

ROFL ROFL Do we even get that stock? I thought I was doing pretty good at 20mpg.

I'll second this list with some changes:

would suggest:
MHI Evo III (not the GT, don't start the debate up please)
AFC
550s
FMIC
3" full exh.
stock Evo III manifold/tubular O2
BOV
Pocketlogger
190 lph
boost gauge
intake hard pipe (get it black if you want stock look

:

I get 28 mpg on my gst, has a K&N kit, otherwise bone stock. Thanks everyone for the prompt replies:thumb:

Still up in the air about going with a 2.5" or 3" exhaust.

Can a 3" exhaust produce less power when your power goals are closer to 300 hp and not 400hp, or vise versa 2.5" exhaust.

Will the apexi ws 80mm GSX catback fit on a gst? they don't make 80mm for the gst.

Concerning fmic, they're many diff sizes, i've heard a fair amount of good things despite being very affordable about the ssautochrome fmic but it seems very large (28X10.5X3.5"), would it be overkill for my goals and possilbly even worsen things. Whats a good size fmic for 300whp goals?
