What happened inside my ECU

So I pulled my ecu (91 talon) to be sure that the little 'E' on my sticker was indeed correct in indicating that I had an eprom ECU. Well, the good news is, it's eprom, saving me a little bit of money and trouble when I upgrade to DSMLink. The bad news, however, is that it looks like there was some crazy bukkake party going on in my ECU.

There's a white RTV type goop all over my ECU, namely on the caps, and on a few other (seemingly) random places. Has anyone ever seen anything like this in an ECU? As far as I know it's from the factory, but then again I bought the car after it had been on the road for 14 years so who knows what could have been done to it over the course of it's life.

I'm not particularly worried about it at this point, but I guess I should figure out if this is normal and if I should indeed be worried about it.

It looks pretty clean inside and if everything is working fine I wouldn't worry about it. You'd possibly cause more damage trying to remove it than just leaving it there.

yeah, I wasn't planning on pulling it off. . .I'd probably rip a cap or two out as they're almost completely encased in this crap. I was wondering if anyone had ever seen anything like this before or if I'm a pioneer.

I just can't wait until I have to replace caps. . .

That appears to be a ridiculous amount of silicone adhesive. We use a similar product at work. Its function usually serves to hold parts stable during vibration over time. My guess would be that over the 14 years someone took the ecu to get the caps fixed. In return the did so and placed the silicone on it as a precaution. Do not take it off. If it works fine leave it as it. Good luck.
