ok, I know the 2g,- recently I obtained a 1990 tsi fwd 1g. I know that their similiar, but there are some big differences.
I got extremely lucky.- my neighbor's 50, and cant drive stick anymore, and needed the car sold for money.- it hasnt been driven since 1992, - it has 12k on it,
garaged, body/paint/interior is prestine- its completely stock- original spark plugs.- its a perfect white/black top.- $1200-OMG!!!!
I drained every fluid, flushed the coolant twice. changed the plugs/wires/battery, refilled all fluids. It started right up perfect!!!

Anyways, I was driving it- it pulls so hard for stock! however I noticed that the BOV didnt sound at all ( even at redline). Also, my friend was following me, and noticed right before I shifted, it puffed greyish/blue smoke!
that never happened to me with my 2g, so I dont know what it means.
Also, my 2g BOV even sounded when I got it.
why doesnt my stock 1g?

It doesnt make the pssshhht, sound because the stock rubber intake muffles the sound, get a hard air intake pipe and you will hear it. The bluish/grey smoke is from either the turbo seals or the rings. Also that is one hell of a find man, only 12K miles, one owner, and not driven since 92, garaged, and only for 1200$, take some pics and post them in your gallery.

I would compression check the motor just to be on the safe side. I have had the chance to buy a couple 1g cars under 30k miles but don't because when a motor has that few miles and sit's that long the rings can suffer damage on the first fire up and all of the seals, turbo seals, rear main seal, and gasket's become brittle. So it may seem fine for now but I would watch it closely because a car with that little runtime may have some problems in the future. Good find though!

165/165166/166- just comp. tested it - thats at denver- ( mile high) altitude, so I am happy. Theres only smoke right at full boost at about- 6800 rpm

Its smoking from the rings or turbo seals, I would fix the turbo seals this is the cheapest way to figure out which of the 2 it is. If it stops smoking bulish grey then it was the seals, if it keeps on going then its the rings and you will have to pull the head and pull new rings on the pistons.

You did not get a chance for a 1200$ 1G like this . It would be crazy to not buy it . A quick resale would net some nice upgrade money .

ill give you 3500 for it!!!

ive never heard of such low mileage thats insane i wish i could find a deal like that

Sorry, but my new "hell-of-a-baby" elder dsm is mine for keeps- even if I dont drive it, I would open the garage, and I would think I am walking into a mitsubishi dealership in 1990!!!
This thing seriuosly is in such good shape, I couldnt believe it.
She saw one of my friends pull up in his busted 91' tsi, and my neighbor happened to come out. She says " hey I have one of those cars", we look at her, shes like 50, white hair, lived next to her for 15 years and find out she has a "NEW" 1990 under a car cover in her garage!!!!
I say I will buy it from her, she says she needs $1200 for a roof repair. So I come back in an hour, damn- NEW 1990 TSI - OMG!!!!!!!!!!!- my friend was pissed......

when I find my camera, I took some pictures earlier- I willpost them when I find that damn thing...

I dont know how many people could top that. Cant wait to see pics try not to add up the miles to quick thats a classic

Replace the timing belts while you still can.

Excellent advice. I had the belts and water pump done 3 years ago at 54,000 and I probably waited too long but got away with it.

Did you put synthetic lube in the gearbox and check the ECU capacitors for leaks, too?
