hey guys im back again haha sorry :coy:

im going to look at this 1g awd 5spd on dsmtrader listed for 2200 with 114k on it has a 3 inch turbo back and arp head studs motor was just rebuilt everything looks good but the only thing im worried about is he said second gear doesnt grind but is a little hesitant to go in.

im wondering if i ran sychroshift (temporary fix right?) which i cant find locally ( online maybe) and got the metal bushings and did the diy in the tech articles maybe i could fix this? other wise my brother said he could get dsms trannys cheap just wondering what the best route would be...also i have searched and i just read the thread below this one about the second gear grinding

seems like a deecent deal though right? i think i got in trouble for posting the link but if you guys think its ok i will, wish me luck its local so i will walk if its no good

hopefully the next time i post i will be an official dsmer!!!:rocks:

Ask to see reciets, they saying it was aint worth $hit.

This could be shifter linkage problem, or shifter rail, generally the 2nd gear synchro will just grind, not be hesitant. If it is the synchro or rail, the tranny will have to be pulled and gone through and have the problem fixed, if its linkage its no biggie, just adjust it, but you would need to pull the center console.

Synchro shift at best would be a band-aid for a synchro on its way out, but like I said before it could be shifter linkage or rail. You can get it off SBR...www.slowboyracing.com. The metal bushings give you a firmer feel when shifting because there is no give as with the crappy rubber bushings, this wont fix the problem.
If all the engine work, and regular maintenance was done on it and he has reciets to prove it, and the problem with the tranny is just the synchro, shifter linkage or shifter rail it sounds to be a good idea. I would take it for a spirited test drive...after you follow the article step by step that Andy laid out ever so nicely for us. Thanks Andy for that FAQ article. If all else fails you could part it out for more then 2200$.

Well that is dirt cheap for a 1G AWD with a rebuilt engine at least for around here.

I would definitely be skeptical and eyeing it out really close, don't make a fast decision.

As far as the transmission; the synchromesh and similar tranny fluids are very thin. This helps with cold shifting, but does not protect well. I had a 1G with a 2nd gear that was a pain, and I used BG Synchroshift (or whatever it's called), and the transmission went out in about 25K miles. But it was first gear, not 2nd that was failing at that time.

I would instead put in REDLINE MT90, this is the manual transmission fluid that meets the GL4 specifications that 1G turbo trannies require, and is thick enough for AWD (AWD trannies work harder the FWD).

I would check compression. The compression testers are cheap, about $30.

It's my opinion that these cars are highly addictive, and the only time somebody sells one that cheap, that has put a rebuilt engine and lots of money in it, is if something is wrong with it.

I'm not saying don't buy it, just saying watch out. It may only be $2200 now, but it's hard to find qualified mechanics that don't bend you over. They can be expensive to maintain and repair. There are plenty here that have spent more money on the car then they payed for it, or then it's worth.

If you can do your own work, these cars are the best bang for buck out there in the sport compact performance market.

Rebuilds aren't that expensive, he could of had the block freshened up, and replaced bearings, bolts, and rings, ect...he didnt have to do rods/pistons. But like I said before, ask for the reciets because anyone can say the engine is rebuilt, but that dont mean crap until you see the reciet saying what was done, and when, ect...
