How common or normal is it for a talon (2g) to smoke black?

stock turbo, str8 pipe exhaust all the way back. No cats, nor mufflers.

Smoking black means you are running rich, or you have no cat, which is the case...by any chance are you venting you BOV?

Dustin

Dsms run rediculously rich from the factory. Its just unburnt fuel from the engine. I think stock afr at WOT is in the high 9:1 range. I run at a 10.8:1(around there at least) and my car looks like a deisel truck when you hit the go pedal. YOu might want to check for boost leaks just incase to make sure you are not running even more rich than we do stock.

I have the same problem except... i checked mine for boost leak and i had one at my BOV which i fixed. Still smokes.. and what i have a question about is do you have to put your O2 sensor back into the pipe?? If not do you just leave it unplugged or what?? Still having a little bit of a bogging problem which i am still checking for boost leaks b/c thats what i think causes that problem but i dont know i am still new to DSM's and there is not a mechnic around jonesboro that knows anything about these cars. So any help will be much apreciated! Thanxs.

If you're talking about the second O2 sensor, yes leave it screwed in. The first one had better be screwed in or you'll have a hellatious exhaust leak and the ECU will run the motor in limp mode.

Typical target A/F is pretty much what Zach mentioned on the factory ECU: 9.5:1. I run 11.5:1 and I get black smoke behind me on acceleration. Although I'm not running rich, the lack of a cat will also contribute to this.

Its probably from running a straight pipe, this isnt a big deal if thats all it is. but also do a boost leak test to make sure you are not leaking after your MAF. I.E. the IC piping, TB seal, IM gasket.

I have the same problem too but its just when i hit around 5k rpm and theres a popping noise kinda like backfires but with black smokes...any ideas what might be wrong? maybe im running too rich? leak or what? My car hasnt been street/dyno tune yet and im running 16 psi right now....mods are currently up to date.

Its the second o2 sensor and i am aslo running 3" exhuast from turbo with no cat and i drilled a hole in it and put the second o2 sensor back in and the car smokes pretty good at idle and not bad enought to see it as your driving but i also have been having a bogging problem which i thought i fix but i cant figure this stuff out. so i just unplugged the second o2 agian to see if that helps with the smoking problem...

Does it pop or does it feel like you hit a brick wall?

Popping or misfiring is usually cured with fresh plugs and wires. I'd also replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done recently. There's a very good maintenance thread in the FAQ that you can reference here:

If it feels like hitting a brick wall, then it's fuel cut. If you're running stock boost levels, it's obvious that you have a boost leak and need to test. In hindsight, you should do this anyway to ensure that metered air isn't escaping and aggravating an already rich stock tune.

you loaded up with fuel...turn down your fuel or up your boost

Sorry my mods arent all the way updated i am pushing about 15-16 psi on stock turbo with COP conversion and yes it pops and missfires alittle bit at idel and feels like i am hitin a brick wall...

I have no cat and mine spits black crap at idle and makes a nice stain on the garage floor. As I mentioned, my tune is much leaner than yours so you need to accept this as a consequence of not having a cat and the richness of the factory tune.

Yeah sorry i didnt realy specifi what problem i was talkin about... now i am talkin about my bogging problem. Feels like the car is pushing against me and i replaced my stock BOV b.c it was leaking and still does it. So i dont know why its doing it now.

Sorry, those posts got pretty mixed up. I was answering the one above yours.

Anyway, if it feels like it's hitting a brick wall and you need to pick your teeth out of the steering wheel, it's fuel cut. Check for boost leaks and re-run it. If it still does it, you'll need to back down the boost a bit until she runs close to redline without showing the same symptoms. keep in mind that fuel cut is caused by the MAF sensing too much air and not necessarily from a lack of fuel. Go here:

http://www.vfaq.com and look under the Intake section. There's information on building a leak tester.

Also, what kind of BOV did you change your stock one for?

A ebay gready type s.... i am sure its not a very good one but it was a cheap fix to the problem. And would fuel cut happen around 2000-2300 rpm??
Not realy on the throttle either when it bogs

BOV is fine as long as it's not leaking. Fuel cut happens at higher RPM's. If you're bogging down, do the following:

1. Boost leak test
2. Review the maintenance FAQ I linked to and change plugs and wires.
3. Change fuel filter

See what that gets you. I really can't do anything else from here.

Thanks for the help i will do another poost leak test here in about 30mins and get back... i know its not the spark plug wires b/c i have none (COP), and i will check my plugs, how hard is it to change the fuel pump filter

Stock 97 GSX

Hey all, well, anyways, as I was driving home tonight, I noticed that everytime I would hit boost, and either step off the gas or shift, I would get a nice huge black smoke ball to come out the back of my car. The car felt fine, drove fine, boosted fine, etc, besides the nice 007 style smoke screen. Now, I read that this might be a boost leak? Or an o2 sensor might be wrong, would there be any thing else I should check besides these 2? Is my turbo done for? Thanks for the answers.

Boosting = black smoke = running rich = most likely boost leaks.

O2 sensor plays no role in open loop operations (WOT (Wide Open Throttle)).

I have the same problem, only mine isn't actually black, more bluish white. And mine only happens if i build the boost past 5 psi before i shift. I am pretty sure mine is the seals in the turbo, or atleast that is what I have been told by quite a few people.
